NetBackup 5000 Backup Appliance: Welcome to the Party

[Executive Summary: Symantec gets it wrong with an unintegrated and expensive chunk of hardware with the complex and difficult to use NetBackup software stuck on top.]

It’s not every day I agree with Symantec.  But then again, it’s not every day that Symantec admits that they’ve been wrong for many, many years.  Symantec has finally seen the light and is releasing its first integrated backup appliance.  The poorly kept secret that is the NetBackup 5000 backup appliance was announced recently.  I found the following quotes from the Symantec site to be particularly enjoyable:

Simple–Easy to install,configure, and use.

To help data centers maximize on their investment of time and budget, Symantec has compiled the hardware, software and support research down to one inquiry.

Symantec provides end-to-end support for NetBackup 5000. The customer only has to call in to one phone number no matter what the issue is with the appliance, hardware or software.

Yep…Symantec rides to the rescue with a simple, integrated, easy to use, affordable appliance.  Right?  Well…not quite.  Pricing starts at $39,995 for 16TB for the hardware.  Now – I can hear you now – if this is an appliance, what do you mean, for the hardware?  You mean software is priced separately?

Yep…$4995 per protected terabyte on top of the almost $40K for the hardware.  And then there are options.  Lots and lots of options.

Look – here’s what’s going on.  Symantec is attempting to better position itself against EMC’s Avamar.  EMC offers Avamar not only as software but also on an appliance.  Avamar is hideously expensive, but it’s within the ballpark of the NetBackup pricing – and yet Avamar has been eating NetBackup alive in terms of market share.

In the meantime, we’ll let the “titans” of backup, Symantec and EMC, duke it out.  We’re achieving record month-over-month, quarter-over-quarter, and year-over-year results – and the reason is that people are looking for affordable backup, archiving, and disaster recovery solutions that are not only integrated, simple, and elegant – but which offer non-offshored support from people fanatically dedicated to customer satisfaction.

But hey – Symantec – again, welcome to the party!

The past few years have brought a sea change in the way applications are architected, developed, and consumed—increasing both the complexity of testing and the business impact of software failures. How can software testing professionals keep pace with modern application delivery, given the trends that impact both architectures (cloud, microservices, and APIs) and processes (DevOps, agile, and continuous delivery)? This is where continuous testing comes in. D
