Simmons College Commencement Celebrates Boston & Massachusetts

Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol R. Johnson to Speak

BOSTON, March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For its 106th Commencement Celebration on Friday, May 20, Simmons College welcomes two speakers whose work has helped to improve the landscape of Boston and Massachusetts in law and education.

The 10 a.m. undergraduate ceremony will be held at the Bank of America Pavilion, and will feature recently retired Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall, the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The 2 p.m. ceremony for master's and doctoral degree students will feature Dr. Carol R. Johnson, superintendent of Boston Public Schools (BPS).

(Note: Simmons will be streaming live video of commencement at www.simmons.edu/commencement. The college also will be tweeting from the commencement @SimmonsCollege.)

Chief Justice Marshall is the first woman Chief Justice and the second woman to have served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court -- the oldest appellate court in the Western Hemisphere, with a history of more than 300 years.

A native of South Africa, Chief Justice Marshall was a student leader who opposed apartheid and later was unable to return to her home country because of her opposition efforts. After receiving a master's degree from Harvard, and a J.D. from Yale Law School, Chief Justice Marshall practiced law for 16 years and became a partner in the Boston-based law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart; she was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1996. Chief Justice Marshall was the author of the 2003 historic ruling approving same-sex marriage in Massachusetts. The landmark decision Goodridge v. Massachusetts Department of Public Health declared that same-sex marriages were a lawful extension of the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights, the state's Constitution. Chief Justice Marshall will receive an honorary degree from Simmons.

Dr. Johnson became superintendent of Boston Public Schools in 2007, and has spent much of her tenure focused on closing the achievement and access gap, and helping to graduate students who are prepared for college and careers. Dr. Johnson earned her master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota. Her career includes experience as a teacher, principal, and administrator. Under her leadership, the BPS has achieved the lowest dropout rate in two decades. Most recently, BPS students have outperformed their urban peers in math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Dr. Johnson will receive an honorary degree from Simmons.

During Simmons's Commencement ceremony, Simmons College Board of Trustees Chair Lauren Brisky and President Helen G. Drinan also will award honorary doctoral degrees to the following individuals:

  • Millicent Gorham - A Simmons College alumna, Gorham is executive director of the National Black Nurses Association, which represents 150,000 African American nurses in the United States.
  • Rebecca Haag - CEO and president of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts; a powerful advocate for HIV prevention, treatment, and care.
  • Representative Byron Rushing - a member of Massachusetts House of Representatives; a longtime champion of human and civil rights, and the creation of economic housing and health care opportunities for all.
  • Lois Silverman - founder of Concentra Managed Care; founding chair of the Commonwealth Institute in Boston; chairwoman of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She is an honorary trustee at Simmons.

Simmons College (www.simmons.edu) is a nationally recognized private university located in the heart of Boston. It offers undergraduate education for women, and renowned coeducational graduate programs in health sciences, education, liberal arts, social work, library and information science, and communications management, as well as the nation's first MBA program designed specifically for women.

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. But… securing CICD best practices is an emerging, essential, yet little understood practice for DevOps teams and their Cloud Service Providers. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar...
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.
"Evatronix provides design services to companies that need to integrate the IoT technology in their products but they don't necessarily have the expertise, knowledge and design team to do so," explained Adam Morawiec, VP of Business Development at Evatronix, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
To get the most out of their data, successful companies are not focusing on queries and data lakes, they are actively integrating analytics into their operations with a data-first application development approach. Real-time adjustments to improve revenues, reduce costs, or mitigate risk rely on applications that minimize latency on a variety of data sources. In his session at @BigDataExpo, Jack Norris, Senior Vice President, Data and Applications at MapR Technologies, reviewed best practices to ...

Large industrial manufacturing organizations are adopting the agile principles of cloud software companies. The industrial manufacturing development process has not scaled over time. Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
