Rackspace is the world's leading specialist for IT hosting and Cloud Computing, according to Jim Fagan, the company's Hong Kong-based VP and Managing Director for Asia Pacific. The company is also a Platinum Sponsor of Cloud Expo, to be held June 6-9 at the Javits Center in New York.
I recently asked him three questions about the company's business:
1. Rackspace has been a leader in web hosting, and now Cloud hosting, for some time. How quickly is the Cloud Computing business growing in APAC, and where are some of the brightest spots?
We have nine data centers and thousands of support experts at the ready. In APAC, thousands of clients are already using our Cloud services in the US and Europe, but we're expecting even more satisfied customers later this year when we bring our Rackspace Cloud to Asia.
There is already a high demand for our Cloud product in the region, and SMEs, in particular, are quite excited about it. Cloud makes everything it touches easier and cheaper - and with our great, fanatical support services - even better.
2. Rackspace's OpenStack solution aims to prevent vendor lock-in. How does it do so, how important is this to your customers, and what other benefits does OpenStack offer?
Rackspace couldn't be more excited about OpenStack, which is one of the fastest open-source projects in history. We co-founded OpenStack with NASA, the US space agency, less than a year ago. Since then OpenStack has received the support of dozens of companies including Cisco, Dell, Citrix, AMD and Microsoft.
Building your own private Cloud or signing a restrictive contract goes against the whole idea of Cloud -- which is supposed to make IT accessible and affordable to all.
Enter OpenStack - a game-changer and the emerging standards-based platform for Cloud Computing. The future of OpenStack is that you will have the ability to run a federated Cloud that works perfectly no matter where you deploy it - whether its with Rackspace, another hosting company or a colocation provider.
Additionally, OpenStack creates flexibility, so you can deploy the Cloud with as many or as few features as you want. Openstack creates a standard for APIs, a standard for services you'll be able to find in lots of different places, and lots of opportunities within the IT industry.
Linux and Android were open standards that created huge opportunities and innovations in operating systems and smart phones. OpenStack as an open standard will do the same for Cloud.

3. Rackspace is a Platinum Sponsor of the upcoming Cloud Expo. What will the company be featuring to attendees at the conference?
I don't want to spoil any surprises. All I can say is that Rackspace is proud to be a Platinum Sponsor of the Cloud Expo and we're looking forward to meeting old and new friends. From what I've read online, it promises to be a fantastic event and I wish I could be there. You know, I was raised on the East Coast, love New York, and the line-up looks great.
On a side note, I have a terrific list of New York City restaurant recommendations for anyone attending the Cloud Expo. Anyone who would like a copy, or would like to know more about Rackspace's achievements in Asia, or both, is more than welcome to contact me at [email protected].
Between the compelling mockups and specs produced by your analysts and designers, and the resulting application built by your developers, there is a gulf where projects fail, costs spiral out of control, and applications fall short of requirements. In his session at @DevOpsSummit, Charles Kendrick, CTO and Chief Architect at Isomorphic Software, presented a new approach where business and development users collaborate – each using tools appropriate to their goals and expertise – to build mocku...

Container technology is sending shock waves through the world of cloud computing. Heralded as the 'next big thing,' containers provide software owners a consistent way to package their software and dependencies while infrastructure operators benefit from a standard way to deploy and run them. Containers present new challenges for tracking usage due to their dynamic nature. They can also be deployed to bare metal, virtual machines and various cloud platforms. How do software owners track the usag...

As Marc Andreessen says software is eating the world. Everything is rapidly moving toward being software-defined – from our phones and cars through our washing machines to the datacenter. However, there are larger challenges when implementing software defined on a larger scale - when building software defined infrastructure. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Boyan Ivanov, CEO of StorPool, provided some practical insights on what, how and why when implementing "software-defined" in the datacent...
