Using AWS Import / Export with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.
in the release 2.1 we are introducing an option to seed the backup storage with AWS Import/ Export service. AWS Import allows you to ship a hard drive to Amazon to import your data to Amazon S3. Needless to say if you want to transfer many GB or even TB of data the service is very compelling as it can significantly speed things up. Once the initial data load is completed you can continue with regular incremental backups.
You can find out more about AWS Import/ Export (including pricing and supported devices) here
We have extended Backup Wizard to set up an AWS Import

To set up a backup plan with AWS Import job do the following:

1.
Create a Backup Plan using the Backup Wizard
2. On the Plan name step select the "I'd like to use AWS Import/Export feature to make initial backup" option

Note: Compression and encryption will not be used for the initial backup. It means that the file versions that will be uploaded to the Amazon S3 storage via the AWS Import Job won’t be compressed or/and encrypted even if you specify compression/encryption for the backup plan. Further file versions will be uploaded according to the backup plan compression/encryption settings.

3. Click Next to continue backup plan configuration where you choose advanced or simple mode, backup source, compression/encryption and etc.

4. The Device ID step displays all available devices

5. Choose a portable storage device where you want to make the initial backup. This device will be transferred to the AWS service centre.

6. Enter the device ID – it is any description of the device. The AWS service uses the device ID and AWS Import job ID to uniquely identify the device.
7. Click Next. On the Return Address step enter your return address.

Note: When shipping a device to the US from a non-US address or shipping from the US to non-US address, you have to fill in U.S. Customs fields.
For example, you choose APAC region bucket but your return address is in US. So you have to fill in the U.S. Custom fields:

Note: Devices configured to the EU region buckets can only be shipped to EU member countries.
8. Click Next. The AWS Address step displays the AWS shipping address.

9. Print a packing slip. It is a necessary document for making a postal sending. In the packing slip you have to specify your AWS account email, your contact name and phone number/email address.

10. Finish the Backup Wizard.

As a result, the backup plan and the AWS Import job are created. You can see the detailed backup plan status in the Edit Backup Plan wizard: choose the backup plan in Backup Plans tab, click Edit Backup Plan link for a certain backup plan
clip_image011
When the backup plan runs at the first time, it starts an initial backup that will copy your source data to the portable storage device.

Note: Before running the initial backup, make sure there is enough space on the portable storage device.

You can monitor the initial backup status on the Backup Plan tab. When the initial backup is done, you are ready to pack and send the portable device to the AWS service centre. The packing slip contains all necessary details for making a postal sending.
Note: Your source data will be copied to the portable storage device into the root folder with name
“DRIVELETTER$CBCOLON$”

The status of the AWS Import job will be displayed on the Backup Plans tab for a certain backup plan.
As soon as the initial data will be uploaded to the Amazon S3 storage (i.e. AWS Import Job completed), the backup plan continue upload file versions according to the plan settings.
As always we would be happy to hear your feedback and you are welcome to post a comment.

Note: Currently AWS Import/ Export support is in a preview mode and we will officially release it in a few weeks once we get some positive feedback.
