Long-Time HealthEast CEO Announces Retirement

ST. PAUL, MN -- (Marketwire) -- 04/27/11 -- HealthEast Care System President & CEO Tim Hanson today announced his decision to retire after more than 38 years with the organization. His retirement will be effective in January 2012. Hanson has served as President and CEO since 1989.

Hanson shared his retirement plans now to provide ample time to complete the recruitment and hiring process. A national search of both internal and external candidates will be conducted with the goal to select and onboard a new CEO by the end of 2011.

"My lifelong passion has been to provide our patients with the highest quality health care," Hanson says. HealthEast has been named a Top 10 U.S. health care system by Thomson Reuters. Health care systems which received this recognition outperformed their peers by providing better care, following standards of care more closely, saving more lives, creating fewer patient complications, making fewer patient safety errors, and earning better overall patient satisfaction scores. "I believe we have achieved that goal. HealthEast is the benchmark for health care quality in the Twin Cities."

Hanson began his career as an Administrator and Vice President of Bethesda Hospital in 1973. Bethesda became part of the HealthEast system when it was formed in 1986. Hanson first served as Executive Vice President, and in 1989, became HealthEast President and CEO.

During Hanson's tenure, HealthEast has achieved significant accomplishments. In recent years, HealthEast and its hospitals have received much recognition such as:

  • Best Place to Work by both the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal and Modern Healthcare
  • Gallup Great Workplace Award

  • Woodwinds named a Top 100 Hospital by Thomson Reuters

  • For exemplary work on its Care Navigation Strategy, HealthEast received the 2010 Innovation of the Year in Patient Care award from the Minnesota Hospital Association and an Innovation of the Year award from HealthPartners.
  • Bethesda Hospital received the Award of Exemplary Distinction for Behavioral Program/Brain Injury Services -- from CARF

During his distinguished career, he has served as Chair or President of the Minnesota Hospital Association, VHA Upper Midwest, St. Paul United Way Campaign, University of Minnesota Program in Healthcare Administration Alumni Association Foundation, and the Town & Country Club.

He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Hospital Association, the Regional Policy Board 6 of the American Hospital Association, VHA Upper Midwest, Minnesota Business Partnership, St. Paul Chamber of Commerce, Capital City Partnership, Boy Scouts of America/Indianhead Council and the Town & Country Club.

Fred Harris, Chair of the Board of Directors, notes that Hanson has created a unique culture of compassionate care at HealthEast. "The Board is committed to preserving the unique and special culture of HealthEast as it considers CEO candidates," he says. "We are confident that we will ensure a smooth transition of leadership and continuity of operations and strategic mission."

When it comes to cloud computing, the ability to turn massive amounts of compute cores on and off on demand sounds attractive to IT staff, who need to manage peaks and valleys in user activity. With cloud bursting, the majority of the data can stay on premises while tapping into compute from public cloud providers, reducing risk and minimizing need to move large files. Enterprises are universally struggling to understand where the new tools and methodologies of DevOps fit into their organizations, and are universally making the same mistakes. These mistakes are not unavoidable, and in fact, avoiding them gifts an organization with sustained competitive advantage, just like it did for Japanese Manufacturing Post WWII.
The revocation of Safe Harbor has radically affected data sovereignty strategy in the cloud. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Jeff Miller, Product Management at Cavirin Systems, discussed how to assess these changes across your own cloud strategy, and how you can mitigate risks previously covered under the agreement.

The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. More and more companies are looking to microservices as an architectural pattern for breaking apart applications into more manageable pieces so that agile teams can deliver new features quicker and more effectively. What this pattern has done more than anything to date is spark organizational transformations, setting the foundation for future application development. In practice, however, there are a number of considerations to make that go beyond simply “build, ship, and run,” which changes how...
Traditional on-premises data centers have long been the domain of modern data platforms like Apache Hadoop, meaning companies who build their business on public cloud were challenged to run Big Data processing and analytics at scale. But recent advancements in Hadoop performance, security, and most importantly cloud-native integrations, are giving organizations the ability to truly gain value from all their data. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, David Tishgart, Director of Product Marketing ...

What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
