Berkeley, Davis and Auburn Named "Best College Towns for Renters" by ApartmentRatings.com

Second Annual College Town Renter Satisfaction Rankings Rate Renter Satisfaction Based on Ratings by Current Apartment Renters

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/26/11 -- With college graduation season in full swing, ApartmentRatings.com (www.apartmentratings.com), the leading website for user reviews of apartments around the United States, today released its annual rankings of renter satisfaction for the 100 largest college towns and college cities in the country.

Topping this year's list is Berkeley, Calif., home to the University of California-Berkeley, the oldest university in California's University of California system. The university's 35,000 students enjoy a picturesque, small-town feel in the city of about 100,000. Though housing costs can be higher than many other college towns, Berkeley offers numerous public transit options and is extremely pedestrian and bicycle friendly -- an ideal situation for college students.

Berkeley takes the top spot from Davis, Calif., last year's winner, which drops to the #2 spot this year. Berkeley was excluded from last year's rankings because of a lack of review for apartment buildings in the area.

Other top-rated college towns include:

  • Auburn, Ala. (Auburn University)
  • Buffalo, N.Y. (SUNY at Buffalo)
  • Ann Arbor, Mich. (University of Michigan)
  • Madison, Wis. (University of Wisconsin)
  • Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State University at Raleigh)
  • Milwaukee, Wis. (University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee)
  • Boulder, Colo. (University of Colorado at Boulder)
  • Tucson, Ariz. (University of Arizona)

The full list of college towns included in the rankings can be viewed at http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/2011collegetownrankings.

At the bottom of the list was Boston, home to Boston University and Northeastern University. The city received numerous ratings indicating difficult parking, old and poorly maintained apartment buildings, and high rents. Cambridge, Mass., home to Harvard University and recipient of the bottom spot on last year's list, rose several spots in this year's rankings.

"The fact that this year's rankings vary considerably from last year's demonstrates that the market for apartments in college towns is dynamic and constantly changing," said Michael Egan, general manager of ApartmentRatings.com. "We hope that this data -- freshly reported by current renters in college towns -- helps college students and their parents make an informed decision when it comes to college housing."

The College Town Renter Satisfaction Rankings were determined by tabulating overall satisfaction scores from thousands of user-submitted ratings provided in the full year of 2010 for apartment buildings in the cities and towns of the 100 largest four-year colleges and universities in the United States. In addition to overall satisfaction, users on ApartmentRatings.com can rate their rental experience on a number of specific factors including noise, safety and maintenance, as well as leave comments about their own experience living in the buildings.

Enterprise architects are increasingly adopting multi-cloud strategies as they seek to utilize existing data center assets, leverage the advantages of cloud computing and avoid cloud vendor lock-in. This requires a globally aware traffic management strategy that can monitor infrastructure health across data centers and end-user experience globally, while responding to control changes and system specification at the speed of today’s DevOps teams. Consumers increasingly expect their electronic "things" to be connected to smart phones, tablets and the Internet. When that thing happens to be a medical device, the risks and benefits of connectivity must be carefully weighed. Once the decision is made that connecting the device is beneficial, medical device manufacturers must design their products to maintain patient safety and prevent compromised personal health information in the face of cybersecurity threats. All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched interests usually throw a wrench in the work...
Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect...

You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
