Ventana Research Survey Shows More Organizations Use Hadoop to Perform Data Mining and In-Depth Analytics

Karmasphere™, a Big Data Intelligence company, today announced that Ventana Research, a benchmark research and advisory services firm, will publish the results of its groundbreaking survey on enterprise adoption of Hadoop to manage Big Data, and present key findings in a webinar this week.

Ventana polled IT managers, developers and data analysts in hundreds of companies of all sizes across multiple industries, to identify trends, challenges and best practices for coping with Big Data. As the first large-scale, in-depth research conducted in this area, the study serves as the premier statistically valid third-party benchmark for the Big Data industry. Cloudera and Pervasive Software join Karmasphere in co-sponsoring the report.

Among many interesting trends and statistics, Ventana discovered:

  • More than one-half (54%) of organizations surveyed are using or considering Hadoop for large-scale data processing needs
  • More than twice as many Hadoop users report being able to create new products and services and enjoy costs savings beyond those using other platforms; over 82% benefit from faster analyses and better utilization of computing resources
  • 87% of Hadoop users are performing or planning new types of analyses with large scale data
  • 94% of Hadoop users perform analytics on large volumes of data not possible before; 88% analyze data in greater detail; while 82% can now retain more of their data
  • Organizations use Hadoop in particular to work with unstructured data such as logs and event data (63%)
  • More than two-thirds of Hadoop users perform advanced analysis — data mining or algorithm development and testing

Ventana will present the final research results in a webinar on Thursday, June 28, 2011, at 10:00 AM PT.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
So the dumpster is on fire. Again. The site's down. Your boss's face is an ever-deepening purple. And you begin debating whether you should join the #incident channel or call an ambulance to deal with his impending stroke. Yes, we know this is a developer's fault. There's plenty of time for blame later. Postmortems have a macabre name because they were once intended to be Viking-like funerals for someone's job. But we're civilized now. Sort of. So we call them post-incident reviews. Fires are ne...
