NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Announces 2011 Scholarship Recipients

NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) is proud to announce its 2011 Herbert Lehman Education Fund and the Earl Warren Legal Training Program scholarship recipients. LDF's Scholarship Programs were envisioned by Thurgood Marshall as an important means of addressing the financial disparities that prevented African-American students from attending the previously segregated colleges and universities of the South. The Lehman Fund, created in 1964, and the Warren Training Program, incorporated in 1972, have provided financial assistance and nurtured the careers of African-American attorneys and activists dedicated to civil rights and public interest work for five generations.

593 students of all colors applied for scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year, the largest number in four application cycles. From this extremely talented pool, 53 outstanding were awarded Lehman Scholarships (which are provided to undergraduates) and 22 earned awards from the Warren Program (which are provided to law students). The applicants were a diverse group of dedicated individuals from almost all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

"Our world and our nation face perilous times, but meeting these bright young students through their applications have shown me, once again, that the work of idealistic, passionate young people will only serve to make our world a better and more just place," said Karen Thompson, Director of LDF's Scholarship Programs.

Fifty years after the award of the first LDF scholarships, the shared purpose of both the Lehman Fund and the Warren Program remains clear: to provide scholarships that will help students achieve their academic goals, to involve students in advancing the cause of civil rights and to assure that the doors thrown open by Brown v. Board of Education remain open. Previous recipients of the Warren and Lehman Scholarships include: Marian Wright Edelman, Anita Hill, Congressman James Clyburn and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee.
