IBM WebSphere Portal 6.0 Addresses Composite Apps

Part of Extended SOA Strategy from Big Blue

IBM will be upgrading its IBM WebSphere Portal, simplifying working with composite applications, making it faster and easier for businesses to realize the benefits of integrated applications and reusable services, and integrating it with technology it acquired with the Bowstreet acquisition late in 2005.

"Working with composite applications no longer has to be time consuming and difficult," said Ken Bisconti (pictured), vice president, IBM Workplace, Portal and Collaboration Products. "In WebSphere Portal Version 6.0 we are introducing a new application framework which empowers customers to easily assemble applications and process components in the way that best meets their needs."

The latest version of WebSphere Portal, which IBM expects to have available for Linux, AIX, HP, Microsoft Windows, i5OS and Sun in the third quarter this year, ncludes a workflow builder, enabling business process owners to create and modify departmental workflows to meet their needs. Users see only the tasks assigned to them along with relevant information from across the company.

WebSphere Portal Version 6.0 will integrate with the advanced electronic forms capabilities of IBM Workplace Forms. Electronic forms are presented in a standard portal interface, enabling users to easily access information from other applications and collaborate to create, edit, or view electronic forms. Once completed, the e-form can be automatically routed to the next person in the process or stored in a repository, according to IBM.

The latest version of WebSphere Portal also includes IBM Workplace Web Content Management Version 6.0, which aims to simplify the creation process with enhanced rich text editors, and inline authoring capability. For administrators, enhancements include a joint administrator's console for WebSphere Portal and Workplace Web Content Management, template customization, and support for Cascading Style Sheets.

IBM says it is now closely aligning WebSphere Portal with WebSphere Portlet Factory. Obtained from its December 2005 acquisition of Bowstreet, WebSphere Portlet Factory is a comprehensive portlet development environment that automates the process of creating, deploying, and maintaining SOA-based portlets.

With WebSphere Portlet Factory, developers can quickly draw on their company's existing applications to create portlets that become the building blocks for composite applications. Once composite applications are created, WebSphere Portal Version 6.0 enables users to save them as templates. As templates, composite applications can be deployed as is, or customized for different groups while maintaining the integrity of the application. In addition, if business conditions change users can quickly modify the template to reflect the new conditions.

Important is Interoperability: composite applications need to be able to run on multiple Portals by multiple Vendors (Oracle, SAP, Bea, etc.)

The Internet of Things (IoT), in all its myriad manifestations, has great potential. Much of that potential comes from the evolving data management and analytic (DMA) technologies and processes that allow us to gain insight from all of the IoT data that can be generated and gathered. This potential may never be met as those data sets are tied to specific industry verticals and single markets, with no clear way to use IoT data and sensor analytics to fulfill the hype being given the IoT today.
Ask someone to architect an Internet of Things (IoT) solution and you are guaranteed to see a reference to the cloud. This would lead you to believe that IoT requires the cloud to exist. However, there are many IoT use cases where the cloud is not feasible or desirable. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Dave McCarthy, Director of Products at Bsquare Corporation, will discuss the strategies that exist to extend intelligence directly to IoT devices and sensors, freeing them from the constraints of ...

A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They’re called Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact on the data center and on server computing in general. Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some ...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, will demonstrate how to move beyond today's coding paradigm ...
Fifty billion connected devices and still no winning protocols standards. HTTP, WebSockets, MQTT, and CoAP seem to be leading in the IoT protocol race at the moment but many more protocols are getting introduced on a regular basis. Each protocol has its pros and cons depending on the nature of the communications. Does there really need to be only one protocol to rule them all? Of course not.
