Minister Fantino Concludes Visit to Sahel Region

ABUJA, NIGERIA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/14/12 -- The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, today concluded a visit to the Sahel region of West Africa, with stops in both Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

While in Burkina Faso, Minister Fantino raised awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel. He visited refugees and locals affected by the drought and political instability. He was accompanied by heads of Canadian humanitarian organizations operating in the Sahel region.

He also met with President Blaise Compaore, Prime Minister Beyon Luc-Adolphe Tiao, regional governors and humanitarian partners to discuss coordination of the response to the crisis and how such crises can be averted in the future.

"This week, I have witnessed the widespread human suffering in the Sahel region first-hand. Our relief efforts in the Sahel exemplify the best of Canadian values," said Minister Fantino. "Since the launch of the matching fund, it is estimated that Canadians have donated $1.8 million to registered charities of their choice. Millions of people continue to suffer the effects of drought and conflict in this region. I encourage all Canadians to support those in dire need by donating to a charity of their choice by September 30 to ensure their contribution is matched by the Government of Canada."

In Nigeria, Minister Fantino advanced Canada's leadership on maternal and child health. He also discussed potential future strategies to deepen Canada's international cooperation with Nigeria in the area of economic growth, such as responsible resource management.

"Canada plays a key role in supporting Nigeria as it strengthens primary health care systems and reduces maternal mortality rates," added Minister Fantino. "Unlocking barriers to economic growth is integral to advancing prosperity in Nigeria. Realizing growth in Africa is in Canada's long-term-prosperity interests as we look to diversify our economy. Our efforts can truly be win-win."

Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), also provides funding for poverty reduction and economic growth in Burkina Faso and Nigeria, including support to microfinance and education.

The deluge of IoT sensor data collected from connected devices and the powerful AI required to make that data actionable are giving rise to a hybrid ecosystem in which cloud, on-prem and edge processes become interweaved. Attendees will learn how emerging composable infrastructure solutions deliver the adaptive architecture needed to manage this new data reality. Machine learning algorithms can better anticipate data storms and automate resources to support surges, including fully scalable GPU-c...
Predicting the future has never been more challenging - not because of the lack of data but because of the flood of ungoverned and risk laden information. Microsoft states that 2.5 exabytes of data are created every day. Expectations and reliance on data are being pushed to the limits, as demands around hybrid options continue to grow.

"NetApp's vision is how we help organizations manage data - delivering the right data in the right place, in the right time, to the people who need it, and doing it agnostic to what the platform is," explained Josh Atwell, Developer Advocate for NetApp, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...

When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. "Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Le...
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...

Containers and Kubernetes allow for code portability across on-premise VMs, bare metal, or multiple cloud provider environments. Yet, despite this portability promise, developers may include configuration and application definitions that constrain or even eliminate application portability. In this session we'll describe best practices for "configuration as code" in a Kubernetes environment. We will demonstrate how a properly constructed containerized app can be deployed to both Amazon and Azure ...
