Shared Learning Collaborative Announces New Chief Executive, Iwan Streichenberger

Thirteen-Year Education Technology Veteran Will Lead Effort to Bring Shared Services for Personalized Learning to Schools

SEATTLE, Nov. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Shared Learning Collaborative LLC (SLC) announced the hiring of Iwan Streichenberger as chief executive officer for the new nonprofit enterprise that will replace the current organization. Before joining the SLC, Streichenberger served as president, Learner Response Systems and Assessment, at Promethean, where he was responsible for product development, marketing and sales strategy for the education technology company's newest division.

The SLC is an alliance of states, districts, nonprofits, foundations and companies with the shared vision of accelerating student achievement through personalized learning. The organization is building a set of shared technology services to allow states and districts to connect student data and instructional materials that currently exist in different formats and locations, in order to integrate them effectively for educators, parents and students.

"One of the biggest draws of coming to the SLC was the chance to change the way education works for students on a large scale," said Streichenberger. "Leading up to our full public launch at SXSWedu, I look forward to sharing the story about the transformative technology we are building and how we are working with our industry partners to help education technology achieve its potential for students."

Before joining Promethean in 2008 as chief marketing officer, Streichenberger served as president of Edusoft (a Houghton Mifflin Company), where he led the company's growth and success in becoming the premier formative assessment company in the United States. Streichenberger's previous experience in publishing, gaming and management consulting inside and outside the U.S. rounds out his perspective on the technology solutions that have the greatest potential to both benefit students and thrive in a more open marketplace.

In his new role, Streichenberger will oversee the SLC's transition from a project to an independent, sustainable nonprofit enterprise, with the goal of making personalized learning affordable and accessible to every state, district, school, teacher and student in the country.

Streichenberger's immediate tasks will include securing a variety of vendor partners and helping the first group of pilot districts in New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Illinois and Colorado better integrate their technologies. To date, the SLC has signed on 11 education technology partners, including PBS, Global Scholar and Clever.

"As an experienced education technology executive, Iwan brings a critical understanding of how vendors, developers, teachers and administrators work together to identify the right technology solutions," added Stacey Childress, chairman of the board at SLC. "Iwan's leadership and passion will provide a huge benefit to our pilot districts and also be a key factor in making the shared services available to more school systems in the coming years."

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second.
