Lower Fuel Costs Result in Lower Rates for Mon Power and Potomac Edison West Virginia Customers

FAIRMONT, W.Va., Dec. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mon Power and Potomac Edison, subsidiaries of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), announced that the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia has issued an order lowering electric bills for their West Virginia customers beginning January 1, 2013.

As a result of the order, the monthly bill for a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity will drop about $5 or approximately 5 percent.  With this decrease, rates for Mon Power and Potomac Edison residential customers will be about 20 percent below the national average.

Under a cost recovery process established by the PSC in 2007, Mon Power and Potomac Edison customer bills are adjusted annually to reflect increases or decreases in the cost of fuels used to generate electricity and purchased power.

The decrease lowers electric rates by $66 million, primarily reflecting lower coal and purchased power costs during the past year. For Mon Power and Potomac Edison customers, coal costs represent the single largest component of the cost to produce electricity. 

The decrease also includes $5 million of synergy savings directly resulting from the merger of FirstEnergy and Allegheny Energy, which closed in February 2011.

To help customers manage their bills, Mon Power and Potomac Edison offer budget plans, special payment plans, and access to energy assistance programs.
