Covanta Energy Recognized as the 2012 Outstanding Corporate Citizen by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities

MORRISTOWN, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 02/06/13 -- The New Jersey State League of Municipalities named Covanta Energy, a world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, as the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Corporate Citizen Award. The New Jersey State League of Municipalities (NJSLOM) presents the award to corporations that contribute the most to the success of the League and provide high quality programs for New Jersey's municipalities. This is the first year Covanta has received the award.

Covanta, based in Morristown, NJ is an active corporate citizen in New Jersey. The company has been a proud supporter of the Sustainable Jersey Program since its inception in 2009 and has supported NJSLOM programs including the annual league conference. The company is also an integral partner in the NJ Division of Consumer Affair's Project Medicine Drop Program, safely and sustainably disposing of unwanted medications at no cost at its Energy-from-Waste facilities throughout the state.

Covanta's three Energy-from-Waste facilities in Essex, Union and Warren counties sustainably process approximately 4,800 tons of municipal solid waste per day into 120 megawatts of renewable electricity -- enough to power 85,000 homes. The facilities also recycle enough metal each year to build over 20,000 new hybrid cars.

Recovering energy from waste after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle is a critical component of managing residual waste. For every ton of municipal solid waste processed at Energy-from-Waste facilities, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton less of carbon dioxide emissions. This is possible due to the avoidance of methane from landfills, the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.
