Frost & Sullivan: Agrochemical Technologies Making Rapid Advancements

Ongoing research aims to improve the scalability and cost-efficiency of superior agrochemicals

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Agrochemical technology has huge potential for development as it shifts from solely providing crop yields for food and feed purposes to aiding the production of biomass used for renewable chemical production. With farmers expected to heighten food production to meet the demands of a burgeoning world population, there is a need for agrochemicals that can generate substantially high yields with less land.

"Seed treatment technology, which involves coating seeds with certain agrochemicals in which the resulting seedlings and plants acquire favorable properties, is rapidly gaining popularity," said Technical Insights Research Analyst Krishna Venkataramani. "To avoid the use of organohalides and similar conventional agrochemicals that harm the environment, ongoing agrochemical research focuses on the development of eco-friendly pesticides and insecticides."

The excessive use of conventional agrochemicals over a long period has led to the emergence of resistant strains in moths, fruit flies and rats. As such, this has created an urgent demand for robust compounds capable of fighting these strains, preventing microbial infections, and protecting crops from pests. In addition, biocompatible agrochemicals that prevent the accumulation of harmful chemicals in the food chain have become a necessity.

Improving the scalability and cost efficiency of these superior agrochemicals through R&D is also crucial, as price is an important factor, especially in Asia. However, R&D in the agrochemicals sector is a time-consuming and expensive process, with identified chemicals undergoing field trials before being introduced in the market. Obtaining biological sequences to develop a biocide through characterization and genetic mapping is a lengthy and complex procedure too, considering the variety of pest species.

Therefore, the effective management of available technologies is vital to sustain business dynamics. Technology developers can set up common access libraries and fund universities to research and obtain genetic information, understand genetic strain mechanisms, and develop new active ingredients.
