Harper Government Supports Business Development in Yukon

CanNor investments foster strong and diversified local business community

WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- (Marketwired) -- 04/10/13 -- Yukon Member of Parliament Ryan Leef, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council today announced funding for four projects that will strengthen Yukon businesses and foster a sustainable and diversified local economy.

"The Government of Canada is proud to work with our partners to support the growth of small and medium enterprises in Canada's North," said MP Ryan Leef on behalf of Minister Aglukkaq. "These projects will provide entrepreneurs with improved tools to expand and diversify their businesses and create jobs."

"A healthy and thriving business sector will identify and capitalize on economic growth opportunities and circulate those dollars locally," Yukon's Economic Development Minister Currie Dixon said. "The departments of Economic Development and Education will continue to work with CanNor to promote access to training for all Yukoners as our territory's economy develops and diversifies."

"The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce has been working to promote and support the growth of the SME community in Whitehorse and Yukon for the past several years", said Rick Karp, President of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. "This funding from CanNor and the Yukon Government will allow us to give training and support so that our businesses can grow and prosper creating jobs and wealth for all Yukon."

"CanNor funding will enable the Yukon Chamber of Commerce to facilitate discussions and engage the business community and wider Yukon in efforts to build a strong and sustainable economy for the Territory's future," said Chamber Chair, Darielle Talarico. "The Chamber will be bringing lectures, panel discussions and workshops to the community Chambers in Dawson City, Mayo (as part of the Silver Trail Chamber of Commerce) and Watson Lake; as well as Whitehorse and Yukon Communities currently unserved by community Chambers of Commerce."

"This funding from CanNor will allow the AFY to work directly with Yukon entrepreneurs to develop the supply of bilingual tourism products and services," said Angelique Bernard, President of the AFY. "The AFY thus hopes to meet the increasing demand from the Francophone market and local industry players."

Four projects will receive a total investment of $942,290 from CanNor to support small business development in Yukon. The funding will support business training and networking opportunities for Yukon businesses through the Whitehorse and Yukon Chambers of Commerce, as well as the development of bilingual tourism marketing products and services with L'Association Franco-Yukonnaise.

"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded MP Leef.

Investment in these projects is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building across the North.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North through its contribution programs, and for related policy development and research.
