American Traffic Solutions Fleet Services "PlatePass" Helping to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - October 01, 2013) - PlatePass®, the electronic toll payment system that enables renters and fleet drivers to use high-speed, electronic toll collection (ETC) lanes does more than just make driving more convenient; turns out, the service also is good for the environment.

Designed to help rental car customers and fleet drivers use high-speed, cashless toll lanes without incurring costly violations, PlatePass also can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by enabling drivers to bypass slower stop-and-go traffic on non-toll roads as well as backups at cash toll lanes, eliminating extended idling.

A recent study by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association compared the emissions of air pollutants on an all-electronic, cashless toll road to those on a parallel non-toll roadway. The findings showed using the ETC road reduced overall fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, with reductions in dangerous pollutants ranging from 28 percent to 56 percent. The study also found less idling not only provided cleaner air, but also saved drivers millions of dollars annually by not burning through fuel while waiting in traffic.

Another analysis of ETC roads and greenhouse gases showed driving through a cashless tolling station can lower CO2 emissions by more than 60 percent compared to driving through cash-only tolling stations. In the study, performed by the Center for Transportation Training and Research at Texas Southern University, a vehicle emitted an average of 160 grams of CO2 while driving through a cashless tolling station versus 480 grams while using a cash lane.

To date, PlatePass has paid nearly 50 million tolls for fleet and rental car drivers on toll roads throughout the country, translating in a reduction of roughly 16 billion grams of CO2 emitted into the air or the equivalent of approximately 1.8 million gallons of gasoline.

"The convenience of PlatePass and its ability to reduce stop-and-go traffic results in both environmental and quality-of-life benefits," said Adam Draizin, president of ATS Fleet Services. "PlatePass not only is beneficial for rental and fleet drivers but also has indirect environmental benefits."

PlatePass -- just another way ATS is making life safer, easier and greener on the road ahead.

ATS Fleet Services will be exhibiting at the Green Fleet Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, Oct. 1-2 (Booth #305).

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar...
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.

To get the most out of their data, successful companies are not focusing on queries and data lakes, they are actively integrating analytics into their operations with a data-first application development approach. Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
