National Park Service and Internet2 To Deliver 150th Anniversary Reading of the Gettysburg Address Live To Schools and Libraries Across the United States

The National Park Service, Internet2, and Internet2 member organizations across the country are partnering to deliver Tuesday’s Dedication Day ceremony marking the 150th Anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address live over the Internet2 ultrafast network to an estimated 90,000 colleges and universities, K-12 schools, public libraries, and museums nationwide. "The Gettysburg Anniversary showcases what the Internet2 community and the National Park Service can achieve by partnering together," said John S. Morabito, Vice President of External Relations and General Counsel, Internet2. “We welcome the National Park Service into our community as a new member of Internet2 and look forward to helping them share our nation's treasures with students across the country by using the Internet2 Network.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson will speak at the event, which also features U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Interior, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address by Lincoln portrayer James Getty. In addition, 16 people will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and become U.S. citizens.

Following the official ceremony, seven K-12 schools and public libraries from around the country will connect with park rangers from Gettysburg National Military Park over interactive videoconferencing to discuss the following three themes:

  • The aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg;
  • Myths surrounding President Lincoln's visit to Gettysburg in 1863; and
  • The meaning of the Gettysburg Address, then and now.

The schools and libraries participating in the interactive videoconferencing program include:

Passaic Valley High School, Little Falls, New Jersey;
Cornell High School, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania;
Portage Lake District Library, Houghton, Michigan;
Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho;
Utah Education Network (students from Salt Lake City School District);
and Russell Middle School, Winder, Georgia.

This interactive portion of the program is part of the Presidential Primary Sources Project (PPSP), which is sponsored by Internet2’s U.S. UCAN K20 Initiative, U.S. Presidential Libraries and Museums, and the National Park Service.
