gigg.com announced today that it will partner with Run4Philippines.com and Provo Live to host a 5k and 10k race and charity concert event. The funds raised will be donated to Globus Relief International, who will provide aid to those affected by typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The race will occur on January 4, 2014 in downtown Provo. Members of the Provo and surrounding communities are encouraged to register and, in addition to the race, there will be several other events to raise money. For the “Polar Bear Plunge” participants will leap into a freezing pool of water for an additional donation by sponsors, while the “Snowball Blast” offers contestant the chance to win fantastic prizes.

"It's great to see Utah come together and support those devastated in the Philippines," Utah Senator Mike Lee said, "it shows the character of the people who live in this State."

In addition to the race and fundraising, local musicians have the opportunity to compete head-to-head for the opportunity to perform at the event. Videos can be submitted to gigg.com where fans can vote for their favorites. At the end of voting, four winners will be selected to play on stage at the Run4Philippines charity event.

"Running for such a cause is the perfect way to start off the New Year," said Ash Robinson, the president of Globus Relief. "This is a great opportunity to assist those who have suffered and continue to suffer the devastating effects of Typhoon Haiyan."

The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to simplify and streamline our lives by automating routine tasks that distract us from our goals. This promise is based on the ubiquitous deployment of smart, connected devices that link everything from industrial control systems to automobiles to refrigerators. More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...
