Phablets: New Battlefield for Mobile OSes

What Mobile Operating Systems Are Installed on Phablets?

Phablets are becoming more and more popular. Many manufacturers make this type of smartphones prioritized. However, most of phablets are Android-based devices. Are there any alternatives for iOS or WinPhone fans?

Android
The mobile operating system, which gave birth to phablets, won't stop evolving and starts to support higher screen resolutions. Android-smartphone manufacturers obediently got involved in the who-develop-bigger-smartphone race. Today huge smartphones have screens of 5-6,1 inches and the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

Until recently, the 4.7-inch HTC One has  the record for the pixel density: 468 ppi. But BBK Electronics has just introduced a Vivo Xplay 3S smartphone, which display has a diagonal of 6 inches and 2560x1440 pixels resolution (490 ppi).

However, next year will demonstrate new achievements in "phablets" development.

iOS
In September 2013 iPhone 5S was presented. Despite the new features, the display hasn't evolved and remained 4 inches. There are lots of rumors in the Net that Apple is working on new gadgets with smaller an bigger screens, however, the company hasn't revealed anything new yet.

BlackBerry
In late January, BlackBerry presented two devices with the new operating system - Blackberry 10 - Z10 and Q10. However, mass user didn't want to pay a lot of money for fairly modest specifications. It resulted in the situation when the shops had to reduce the original price several times.

Later another two models - Q5 and Z30 - came out, but they were not able to drastically increase sales. Z30 has the biggest screen diagonal - 5 inches, but the resolution and pixel density is higher in the 4.2-inch Z10: 1280x768, 356 ppi. The company fired the director, but the situation hasn't become better.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that Blackberry smartphones are quite decent gadgets, but not for the money that they ask for them.

Windows Phone
While smartphones on Windows Phone 7 were released by half a dozen of different vendors, the "WinPhone 8" gadgets come almost exclusively under the Nokia label. After the latest update, the OS has overcome the screen resolution limit, and a WinPhone phablet appeared on the market - a 6-inch Nokia 1520 with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a density of 367 dpi. And even 4.5-inch Nokia smartphones overtake iPhone 5 in pixels density (and as experts claim in the display quality). The future of such phablets seems to be bright as the WinPhone development is becoming more popular.

Sailfish
Presentation of the Sailfish operating system from Jolla took place more than a year ago, but only in May the company demonstrated the first device. Sailfish is a successor of MeeGo.

The gadget has a 4.5-inch screen with the 960x540 pixels resolution (245 ppi), and it is in all ways worse than Blackberry Q10, but for some reason the Finnish gadget is called promising.

Firefox OS
The first information about "Mobile Firefox" appeared in the summer of 2011, but only in July 2012, the platform received its current name and began to be developed actively. In the spring of this year, the first devices appeared: Geeksphone Keon and Geeksphone Peak, later ZTE Open, Huawei Ascend Y300II , LG FireWeb, Alcatel OneTouch Fire were announced. Basically, these are budget devices with small screens and very limited list of applications.

The max display diagonal is 4.3 inches, the maximum resolution - 960x540 pixels (256 ppi). Perhaps, the system can do even more, but so far there are very strong doubts that the new OS will be a success.  Some people say that it won't die as the OS is supported by a great corporation, but the others are still skeptical about it.

Other
There is nothing special to say about other mobile platforms. Symbian has been still alive for a while, Nokia even released a photosmartphone -  Nokia 808 PureView, however, all other characteristics, except photographic, do not stand out.

In February Samsung announced a Bada merger with the new Tizen platform. In its turn, Tizen is already released in several versions, but the first commercial smartphones on the OS Tizen are scheduled for early 2014.

Ubuntu Touch was announced in early January 2013, while both mobile and desktop versions of the OS can be installed on a smartphone, and it can be used as a full-fledged computer. In February, Mark Shuttleworth, the President of Canonical, announced that the first smartphones with mobile Ubuntu will be available in October. But the fundraising campaign failed and a Ubuntu phone is just a project.

As you see, good phablets are released only with Android on board. It is possible that in 2014 year we will see huge new iPhones, Blackberries, and WinPhones.
