North Phoenix, Arizona Hotel Pays It Forward to Transform One Family's Christmas

Partnering With The Salvation Army, the Residence Inn Phoenix Demonstrated What Companies Can Accomplish All Year Round

PHOENIX, AZ -- (Marketwired) -- 01/06/14 -- For the fortunate few, the holidays are a time to exchange gifts, reconnect with family and be merry. For too many others, however, the season throws into sharp relief their struggles. Case in point is one Phoenix family in which the father lost his full-time job, the mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer and the three children were left thinking more about survival than Santa. While some of these problems were beyond any one person's ability to solve, plenty of them were handled with compassion and competence by six managers at the Residence Inn Phoenix. And their example is one that many other groups and organizations can follow any time of year.

Working through The Salvation Army's Adopt-A-Family program, this hotel in North Phoenix, Arizona was able to help the family forget its troubles during the Christmas holiday by gifting each member with clothes, shoes, jackets, toiletries and other essentials, as well as toys for the children who are just 7, 5 and 4 years old.

The Adopt-a-Family program runs during the holidays, but it is exemplary of the kinds of opportunities available all year round to individuals, groups, families and companies who want to help those in need. From corporate sponsorship of programs, to volunteer opportunities, the Salvation Army affords countless chances for everyone to get involved in his/her community.

As a North Phoenix business hotel, the Residence Inn Phoenix is accustomed to extending a warm welcome to its guests. Such attention to detail is what has made this property one of the most inviting extended-stay hotels in Phoenix, Arizona, and it directly benefitted the managers' adopted family as well, since the staff was careful to account for each family member's needs. Living off a fixed income of less than $950 per month, the family struggles to get by with just one car that is often broken. The mother, meanwhile, is not receiving treatment for her cancer because she lacks insurance, but she will walk her children three miles to school to make sure they attend every day. Recognizing that such a family deserved a memorable Christmas, the hotel staff saw to it that everything down to the wrapping paper was accounted for.

While the holiday season is on its way out, the commitment of the participating managers shows no signs of diminishing. The staff's experience with the program was so rewarding that not only do they encourage other organizations to participate in this program and others like it, but they also intend to follow their adopted family throughout the year to donate gently used clothing and toys and other necessary items that can help the family get back on its feet. Such dedication inspires other people and companies to do what they can to help, no matter what time of year it may be.

DevOps theory promotes a culture of continuous improvement built on collaboration, empowerment, systems thinking, and feedback loops. But how do you collaborate effectively across the traditional silos? How can you make decisions without system-wide visibility? How can you see the whole system when it is spread across teams and locations? How do you close feedback loops across teams and activities delivering complex multi-tier, cloud, container, serverless, and/or API-based services?
Without lifecycle traceability and visibility across the tool chain, stakeholders from Planning-to-Ops have limited insight and answers to who, what, when, why and how across the DevOps lifecycle. This impacts the ability to deliver high quality software at the needed velocity to drive positive business outcomes. Cloud based infrastructure deployment is becoming more and more appealing to customers, from Fortune 500 companies to SMEs due to its pay-as-you-go model. Enterprise storage vendors are able to reach out to these customers by integrating in cloud based deployments; this needs adaptability and interoperability of the products confirming to cloud standards such as OpenStack, CloudStack, or Azure. As compared to off the shelf commodity storage, enterprise storages by its reliability, high-availabil...

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...
