CES - Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, today announced the addition of next generation Oracle Java™ ME Embedded version 8 solutions based on Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI) chipsets to its Cinterion® portfolio of cellular modules and devices. With support for Java and for the SensorLogic cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) platform, the new products enable Gemalto to launch next generation embedded solutions and services that simplify Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology and speed up application development to expand the growing Internet of Things (IoT). The new products1 will target applications from medical devices, automobiles and smart meters to shipping containers, home appliances and alarm systems.
The Cinterion® M2M end-to-end portfolio of solutions and services provides secure, wireless connectivity within an intelligent Java framework to support the increasing number of innovative IoT applications. Gemalto’s new Java enabled products join an existing portfolio of QTI-based modules that span the full range of cellular technologies, from CDMA to LTE. This flexibility enables device manufacturers to build solutions within a single design to target any industry segment and any network technology, ensuring long-lasting and future-proof applications. The Java software runs on the onboard application processors of the Qualcomm Gobi™ chipsets, which can eliminate the expense of additional processing and memory chips, and thereby reduce the overall cost, complexity and size of the solutions.
“We integrated Oracle Java onto our chipsets to enable the worldwide Java development community to imagine, develop and deploy creative, next generation, cost optimized cellular-based M2M applications,” said Nakul Duggal, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Together with Gemalto, we share a vision and common goal to provide the building blocks to enable the Internet of Everything, and we are excited about these new additions to their Cinterion module portfolio.”
“Qualcomm Technologies is a leader in providing cellular technologies to M2M customers around the world, so it was a natural step to support Java on our Qualcomm Technologies portfolio," said Andreas Haegele, head of the Cinterion M2M product portfolio at Gemalto. "Our family of powerful M2M products that support Java has been well received by customers. Multiple applications can run in parallel and a rich application environment allows the vast global Java developer community to reuse existing resources and speed up system integration. The architecture simplifies over-the-air provisioning and updates, enabling remote M2M application management that keeps solutions running for more than 10 years. ”

1 The new products are based on Qualcomm® Gobi™ QSC6270 Turbo (HSDPA) and Gobi 6x00 (Multimode EV-DO, HSPA+)

Successful transition from traditional IT to cloud computing requires three key ingredients: an IT architecture that allows companies to extend their internal best practices to the cloud, a cost point that allows economies of scale, and automated processes that manage risk exposure and maintain regulatory compliance with industry regulations (FFIEC, PCI-DSS, HIPAA, FISMA). The unique combination of VMware, the IBM Cloud, and Cloud Raxak, a 2016 Gartner Cool Vendor in IT Automation, provides a co...

Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the back-end service, and the mobile application for the end user’s controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target –...
