Digital Element’s IP Geolocation Technology Enables Emergency Service Calls For VOIP Users

COCUS AG, a German telecommunication consultancy and solution provider, today announced the deployment of Digital Element’s pioneering IP geolocation technology, specifically to enable a large telecommunications client to determine the location of a person calling on a Voice Over IP (VOIP) phone to support emergency call routing, prevent fraudulent service usage and fulfill regulatory requirements on location detection.

COCUS was tasked by one of its global telephony clients to design and implement the solution into their respective end-to-end architecture and ensure optimum IP geolocation for all access channels.

COCUS chose Digital Element’s IP geolocation intelligence technology as part of a solution that automatically and dependably determines the location of a potentially nomadic device by IP address, allowing, for example, the call to be routed to the nearest emergency service centre, in case of emergency calls.

COCUS and their telephony client have deployed the new service in Germany with plans to roll out the service to other countries’ networks.

Elmar Kinkel, Chief Operating Officer, COCUS, commented: “Mission critical to the service is the fast, dependable and precise location of potentially nomadic customer premise equipment to ensure service effectiveness of emergency call routing or network update provisioning. We therefore needed to be sure that we were working with IP data that is as accurate and frequently refreshed as possible. We selected Digital Element based on solution trials because they have the most accurate and granular IP location data available globally. In addition, Digital Element’s data is refreshed more frequently than that of any other IP data supplier. Digital Element also provides excellent technical support to resolve any critical issues that may occur.”

Founded in 1999, Digital Element is the industry pioneer of IP geolocation technology and its NetAcuity Edge technology has revolutionised the IP geolocation space. By combining IP routing infrastructure analysis with anonymous location insight gleaned from a network of global commercial partners, NetAcuity Edge provides the most detailed, hyperlocal dataset available worldwide today that maintains user anonymity and complies with the highest standards of end-user privacy.

Kate Owen, Digital Element’s Managing Director, Europe, said: “COCUS are using our IP geolocation data in a creative and unique way to solve a real world problem. Over recent years many users have switched from landlines to VOIP, and the resulting limited access to emergency services for many VOIP users is unacceptable. We are delighted to be helping resolve this important issue.”

COCUS joins Digital Element’s other high-profile clients in the telecommunications sector, including Tiscali, Level 3 Communications, F5 Networks, AOL, Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon, Earthlink, VeriSign and many others.

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
