Antifraud Technologies Provided by Global Voice Group Enable the Authorities to Dismantle a Major Clandestine Telephony Operation in Liberia

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, January 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

GVG constantly innovates and invests in fraud management in order to better support the telecoms regulators in their fight against fraudsters

The evidence gathered through a SIMBox localization system provided by its technical partner, Global Voice Group (GVG), has allowed the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) to have a Lebanese national arrested for using SIM cards in order to illegally terminate international calls on the Liberian networks.

By putting an end to this clandestine SIMBox operation, the LTA spares the legitimate operators and the Liberian State considerable revenue losses, estimated at several million US dollars and caused by the impossibility to collect a portion of the revenue generated by international calls. The purpose of the equipment and SIM cards that were seized at the suspected fraudster's residence in Congo Town was indeed to modify the parameters of thousands of calls coming from abroad on a daily basis in order to terminate them as simple local calls on the Liberian networks, thus avoiding the rates that apply to international calls.

The localization of the suspected fraudster, and ultimately the dismantling of his clandestine telephony operation, were made possible thanks to a SIMBox detection technology which the LTA obtained from GVG.

As Mrs. Angelique Weeks, President of the regulatory agency, pointed out: "This is another example of LTA's ongoing efforts in the fight to thwart criminal activities that deny government of much needed revenues from the telecom sector." (Source: http://allafrica.com/stories/201312161435.html)

The SIMBox localization technologies were provided by GVG in the context of a technical partnership formed by the company and the LTA with a view to executing a global project for the securing and regulation of the telecoms sector in Liberia. This project was launched under the acronym IGMS (International Gateway Management System). The IGMS project aims to fight against fraudulent telephony operations and to improve the quality of service on the Liberian networks, as well as their fiscal and financial performances, for the profit of the State, the consumers and the industry's legitimate stakeholders.

Fraud management is an important aspect of GVG's activities, not only in Liberia, but also in all the countries where the company's solutions have been successfully deployed. GVG constantly innovates and invests in order to ensure that telecoms regulators, with whom it has formed strong partnerships, benefit from the best tools available to counteract this phenomenon that brings about substantial revenue losses for both the legitimate operators and the States.

The essence of data analysis involves setting up data pipelines that consist of several operations that are chained together – starting from data collection, data quality checks, data integration, data analysis and data visualization (including the setting up of interaction paths in that visualization). In our opinion, the challenges stem from the technology diversity at each stage of the data pipeline as well as the lack of process around the analysis.
