Tips for Tackling a Growing Holiday Photo Collection

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 01/10/14 -- Capturing precious family moments over the holidays is a necessity. However, being too snap-happy can result in an overwhelming photo collection. To lessen the burden of organizing photos, Henry's School of Imaging Manager Ren Bostelaar offers some helpful tips to keep holiday photo collections organized and under control.

Getting Started: Keeping photos organized should start as soon as the shoot ends. Instead of letting images sit on a memory card for months, Bostelaar recommends making a habit of regularly downloading images while events are fresh in mind.

Backing Up: A computer hard drive works well to store data, but doesn't last forever. "Once a hard drive fails it can be difficult or impossible to retrieve data. Invest in a good external hard drive as backup storage for important memories. Another easy way to ensure photos don't go missing is to back up files to 'the cloud,' using an online storage solution like Flickr or Photobucket," notes Bostelaar.

Staying Organized: Cameras are often accompanied by simple software for editing and organizing images, yet more advanced programs have tools for taming even the most unruly of collections. Adobe Lightroom™ allows users to sort images by date, GPS location, custom keyword or virtually any other filter. For first-timers, Henry's School of Imaging offers the software course "Managing Photos in Lightroom," a fun, in-depth class for individuals looking to manage their photos as efficiently as possible. "This class teaches students to navigate through their photos by sorting and grouping according to specific criteria, and details the benefits of applying keywords, ratings, flags and tags," describes Bostelaar. This comprehensive class also shares ways to manage multiple photo catalogues and put a back up strategy in place.

Printing: Favourite photos from the holidays deserve to be printed for display. Henry's carries a wide selection of high-quality photo printers, photo paper and photofinishing accessories enabling savvy photographers to develop their own photo collections at home. Additionally, all Henry's locations are equipped with a convenient Kodak Kiosk printer for creating a brag book of top holiday snapshots. Customers can also visit http://www.henrys.com/Henrys-Photofinishing to build a professionally-bound photo book or custom calendar for 2014. "Henry's online photofinishing service can even pull images directly from Facebook and Photobucket, making it easier than ever to show off cherished shots to friends and family," says Bostelaar.
