The Shriver Report Spotlights the Truth About Women, Work, and Families Today

The Kindle-Exclusive eBook Examines What Pushes Women to the Economic Brink

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 01/13/14 -- Maria Shriver, the Center for American Progress and RosettaBooks have released the new edition of The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink. With expert testimony and the latest data, the eBook questions why one in three American women and the children that depend on them are poor, and what public, private and personal solutions can be engaged to address this national crisis.

"We are proud to call greater attention to the troubling financial status of millions of American women today," said Arthur Klebanoff, CEO of RosettaBooks. "This project demonstrates the reach of eBook originals as effective references and resources to make a constructive difference in society."

The eBook is available exclusively on Amazon Kindle and currently offered for free download through January 15. Customers can download and read the Kindle book on their Kindle devices and free Kindle reading apps for iPhone, iPad, Android tablets and phones, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, PC and Mac.

The 433-page eBook includes full-color graphics that capture the critical issues facing women in America, as well as images by seven award-winning photographers led by former White House photographer Barbara Kinney.

Key contributors include Hillary Clinton, Beyoncé, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Howard Schultz, LeBron James, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Ron Haskins, Stephanie Coontz, Muhtar Kent, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter (R-ID), Carol Gilligan, Angela Glover Blackwell, Sheryl Sandberg, Eduardo J. Padrón, John Bouman, Barbara Ehrenreich, Sister Joan Chittister, Eva Longoria, Tory Burch, Danielle Moodie-Mills, Heather Boushey, Ann O'Leary, Kathryn Edin, Nadine Burke Harris, Neera Tanden, Tony Porter, Jennifer Garner, Ai-jen Poo, Peter Edelman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Maya Harris and Rev. Leith Anderson, as well as several women at home and in the workplace who share their personal stories.

Challenged to come up with practical, fresh solutions for the complex problems that face women who work long hours and still struggle to pay the bills, the report asks what is at stake when our nation's most important, undervalued assets toil on the brink of financial disaster.

The report finds that during the last 50 years, women are working outside the home more, but still earn less than men, lead a greater number of families on their own, and need added education to enter the working class.

Readers can join the conversation at ShriverReport.org or on Twitter using the hashtag #WhatWomenNeed. The project trailer, "She's the One," narrated by Maria Shriver, can be viewed here.

"Whenever anyone sits down to write, work, or review a piece of women's policy, they should always keep a copy of The Shriver Report at hand." - Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)

"The Shriver Report provides an overview of the most pressing concerns for struggling American women and children today. These women's issues must be central to our national conversations and policy development in all areas, because societies are stronger when women are personally, politically, and economically empowered. This report's thorough data analysis, personal testimonials, and pragmatic solutions will be invaluable to those who, like Maria Shriver, seek to further that cause." - Madeline Albright

About The Shriver Report: The first Shriver Report, published in 2009, examined a seismic transformation in U.S. history: For the first time, women had become fully half the workforce, and even more momentously, were about two-thirds of the primary and co-breadwinners in American families -- truly the engine driving the economy. We called this new state of American affairs A Woman's Nation Changes Everything, in partnership with the Center for American Progress, as the explosion of women becoming breadwinners changed not just the economy, but marriage, families, schools, the workplace, government, health care -- everything, including men. The following year, A Woman's Nation Takes on Alzheimer's, with the Alzheimer's Association, was the largest study ever to examine the cultural, social, and economic impact of the Alzheimer's epidemic, just as the nation's 78 million Baby Boomers were aging into their mid-60s -- Alzheimer's territory. We reported that women were not only half the people living with the disease but also more than half of the country's unpaid caregivers. A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink is the third in the series. For more information, please visit http://www.ShriverReport.org.

Between 2005 and 2020, data volumes will grow by a factor of 300 – enough data to stack CDs from the earth to the moon 162 times. This has come to be known as the ‘big data’ phenomenon. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to handling, storing and analyzing data aren’t adequate at this scale: they’re too costly, slow and physically cumbersome to keep up. Fortunately, in response a new breed of technology has emerged that is cheaper, faster and more scalable. Yet, in meeting these new needs they...
The cloud promises new levels of agility and cost-savings for Big Data, data warehousing and analytics. "Once customers get a year into their IoT deployments, they start to realize that they may have been shortsighted in the ways they built out their deployment and the key thing I see a lot of people looking at is - how can I take equipment data, pull it back in an IoT solution and show it in a dashboard," stated Dave McCarthy, Director of Products at Bsquare Corporation, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.

In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Claude Remillard, Principal Program Manager in Developer Division at Microsoft, contrasted how his team used config as code and immutable patterns for continuous delivery of microservices and apps to the cloud. He showed how the immutable patterns helps developers do away with most of the complexity of config as code-enabling scenarios such as rollback, zero downtime upgrades with far greater simplicity. He also demoed building immutable pipelines in the cloud ...

Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like “How is my application doing” but no id...

In IT, we sometimes coin terms for things before we know exactly what they are and how they’ll be used. The resulting terms may capture a common set of aspirations and goals – as “cloud” did broadly for on-demand, self-service, and flexible computing. But such a term can also lump together diverse and even competing practices, technologies, and priorities to the point where important distinctions are glossed over and lost.
Predictive analytics tools monitor, report, and troubleshoot in order to make proactive decisions about the health, performance, and utilization of storage. Most enterprises combine cloud and on-premise storage, resulting in blended environments of physical, virtual, cloud, and other platforms, which justifies more sophisticated storage analytics. All clouds are not equal. To succeed in a DevOps context, organizations should plan to develop/deploy apps across a choice of on-premise and public clouds simultaneously depending on the business needs. Information technology is an industry that has always experienced change, and the dramatic change sweeping across the industry today could not be truthfully described as the first time we've seen such widespread change impacting customer investments. However, the rate of the change, and the potential outcomes from today's digital transformation has the distinct potential to separate the industry into two camps: Organizations that see the change coming, embrace it, and successful leverage it; and...
