NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The 20th anniversary of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake— one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history—will be commemorated on Friday, January 17, 2014, from 8:30am to 2pm at California State University, Northridge in Northridge, California. The festivities will be presented by the Valley Economic Alliance—the organization created in direct response to the earthquake in 1994—and attended by Mayor Eric Garcetti and prominent Los Angeles and Southern California dignitaries and elected officials from the past and present, including City of Los Angeles Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield, Mitch Englander, Felipe Fuentes, Paul Koretz, Paul Krekorian, and Tom LaBonge; Congressman Brad Sherman; Assemblymember Raul Bocanegra; Mayor Fred Gaines, Calabasas; Mayor Antonio Lopez, San Fernando; Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Mike Antonovich, County of L.A.
A 12 noon awards luncheon in the campus' Northridge Center will honor individuals who were critical to Southern California's recovery from the 1994 earthquake, including former Councilman Hal Bernson; former Mayor of Los Angeles Richard Riordan; former Governor Pete Wilson; retired L.A. Public Safety Field Deputy Jim Dellinger and Catherine Dellinger, former LAFD Assistant Chief Frank Borden, and former Director of the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (OES), Richard Andrews.
Free public exhibits and workshops will begin at 8:30am on the campus' Plaza del Sol with the American Red Cross, Van Nuys Airport, Los Angeles Department Of Water And Power, Los Angeles Fire Department, Microsoft, and many more.
Occurring at 4:31am PST, the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake had one of the highest ground accelerations ever recorded in urban North America. Lasting 10-20 seconds, the quake was followed by several thousand aftershocks. Ground motion extended 220 miles and caused $20 billion in damage within an 85-mile radius. Over 8,700 people were injured and 57 were killed.
