BALTIMORE, Jan. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- According to CNN's report, cities and towns in the wake of a rare polar vortex, the likes of which have not been seen in the continental US for over thirty years, are hunkering down for a "rare danger warning." Cities like Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC are experiencing temperatures twenty to thirty degrees colder than Anchorage, Alaska and Moscow, Russia. Emergency responders have been called on to deal with rare instances of flooding caused by freezing pipes and water damage in Maryland and Metro DC.

SI Restoration, an industry leader in water damage restoration, has been servicing the Maryland and Washington DC water damage community since 1989. Residential and commercial property owners can suffer tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage due to flooding and water damage caused by bursting frozen pipes. By taking a few precautions during these record-low temperatures, home and business owners can save themselves money and time while protecting assets and valuables like equipment, furniture, and upholstery.

SI Restoration's water damage service team urges property owners to familiarize themselves with the location of their building's water main. Pipes can burst due to freezing temperatures anywhere on the premises of a home or office building. No matter where the disaster occurs, turning of the water main will disrupt the free flow of water throughout the remainder of the building. While the damage already done by the flooding may be severe, it could prove to be far worse if the main is not turned off.

Another tip provided by SI Restoration via http://www.si-restoration.com is to turn off electric in the property when it is safe to do so. Turning of the electric will prevent fire damage and electrocution, ensuring the safety of the property's inhabitants as well as the emergency responders and water damage specialists who need to access the property.

Finally, SI Restoration advises that drains and outflows be inspected regularly to prevent residential or commercial water damage. Blocked or clogged drains are one of the key reasons why areas flood in situations involving frozen pipes. Whether inspection occurs during or prior to the disaster, property owners can limit the damage done to the affected area by ensuring free flow to drains and outflows.

The Internet of Things is in the early stages of mainstream deployment but it promises to unlock value and rapidly transform how organizations manage, operationalize, and monetize their assets. IoT is a complex structure of hardware, sensors, applications, analytics and devices that need to be able to communicate geographically and across all functions. Once the data is collected from numerous endpoints, the challenge then becomes converting it into actionable insight.

The web app is agile. The REST API is agile. The testing and planning are agile. But alas, data infrastructures certainly are not. Once an application matures, changing the shape or indexing scheme of data often forces at best a top down planning exercise and at worst includes schema changes that force downtime. The time has come for a new approach that fundamentally advances the agility of distributed data infrastructures. Come learn about a new solution to the problems faced by software organ...
