Habitat for Humanity New York City Volunteers Build on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream Through Service in Queens

Volunteers Make a Positive Impact on Their Community by Rehabilitating Homes and Painting a Community Center as Part of the 2014 MLK Day of Service

QUEENS, NY--(Marketwired - January 17, 2014) - Habitat for Humanity New York City hosted its 15th annual "Building on a Dream" Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend of service to recognize Dr. King's vision and continue his dream by organizing volunteers to rehabilitate vacant homes as well as revitalize the Roy Wilkins Park Family Center in Queens. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, President Barack Obama's national call to service initiative.

More than 160 volunteers led by 16 AmeriCorps members partnered with future Habitat NYC homeowners for this year's event. The volunteers were joined by hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the country who participated in the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

"This weekend, Habitat NYC volunteers and future Habitat homeowners came together to honor Dr. King's legacy of service and advocacy by making a significant contribution to their community," said Neil Hetherington, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat NYC. "Their hard work echoes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message of social justice and service."

"I am very happy to see that the humanitarian ideals espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have inspired so many caring people to volunteer to take part in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service events that Habitat for Humanity New York City will be sponsoring in Queens," said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. "Thanks to their efforts, vacant and dilapidated single-family homes in southeast Queens will be substantially rehabilitated and the popular Roy Wilkins Recreation Center in Jamaica will be repainted and revitalized. I commend all of the volunteers and their AmeriCorps Service Member leaders for their dedication to making Dr. King's dream of a better life for all Americans a reality."

"With so much focus on consumption during the holiday season, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of public service and community development. At the Southern Queens Park Association (SQPA) and the Roy Wilkins Park Family Center, we seek out opportunities to honor the legacies of leaders such as Martin Luther King and Roy Wilkins, and working with Habitat NYC volunteers on service projects that improve the quality of life of local residents is a wonderful way to celebrate the MLK holiday," said Trevor Scotland, Director of Marketing and Special Events, Southern Queens Park Association.

The weekend highlighted the importance of the AmeriCorps program, which is currently being threatened with elimination in Congress. In New York, 7,200 AmeriCorps members serve with 1,300 nonprofits, schools, public agencies and community partners to recruit more than 1.2 million volunteers. Their service provides much needed support and has an exponential impact on outcomes for nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity New York City.

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform. The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. But… securing CICD best practices is an emerging, essential, yet little understood practice for DevOps teams and their Cloud Service Providers. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar...
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.
"Evatronix provides design services to companies that need to integrate the IoT technology in their products but they don't necessarily have the expertise, knowledge and design team to do so," explained Adam Morawiec, VP of Business Development at Evatronix, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
To get the most out of their data, successful companies are not focusing on queries and data lakes, they are actively integrating analytics into their operations with a data-first application development approach. Real-time adjustments to improve revenues, reduce costs, or mitigate risk rely on applications that minimize latency on a variety of data sources. In his session at @BigDataExpo, Jack Norris, Senior Vice President, Data and Applications at MapR Technologies, reviewed best practices to ...

Large industrial manufacturing organizations are adopting the agile principles of cloud software companies. The industrial manufacturing development process has not scaled over time. Now that design CAD teams are geographically distributed, centralizing their work is key. With large multi-gigabyte projects, outdated tools have stifled industrial team agility, time-to-market milestones, and impacted P&L stakeholders.

Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
