Harper Government Helps Edmonton Combat Crime

Federally-funded crime prevention program to help at-risk youth

EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/17/14 -- Public Safety Canada

The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, Minister Responsible for Northern Alberta and MP for Edmonton-Spruce Grove, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced $5,207,212 in federal funding over five years for a new crime prevention program WrapED, that will help at-risk youth in Edmonton.

WrapED, run by REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities, will provide comprehensive support and engagement to Aboriginal and refugee youth aged 12-17 who are most at risk of involvement with gangs. By promoting community involvement, education, and counselling programs, the project will help youth avoid gang crime related activities, disengage from gangs, and increase cultural and community connections.

Quick Facts

-- From April 2012 to March 2013, the Harper Government funded 105 active,
multi-year community-based crime prevention projects through the
National Crime Prevention Centre, in which more than 16,000 at-risk
    youth participated.

-- Our Government has also committed $7.5 million per year in ongoing
funding to support the Youth Gang Prevention Fund. This fund invests in
communities where youth gangs are an existing or emerging threat, and
supports initiatives that clearly target youth in gangs or at greatest
    risk of joining gangs.

Business professionals no longer wonder if they'll migrate to the cloud; it's now a matter of when. The cloud environment has proved to be a major force in transitioning to an agile business model that enables quick decisions and fast implementation that solidify customer relationships. And when the cloud is combined with the power of cognitive computing, it drives innovation and transformation that achieves astounding competitive advantage.
"Software-defined storage is a big problem in this industry because so many people have different definitions as they see fit to use it," stated Peter McCallum, VP of Datacenter Solutions at FalconStor Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 18th Cloud Expo, held June 7-9, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
Five years ago development was seen as a dead-end career, now it’s anything but – with an explosion in mobile and IoT initiatives increasing the demand for skilled engineers. But apart from having a ready supply of great coders, what constitutes true ‘DevOps Royalty’? It’ll be the ability to craft resilient architectures, supportability, security everywhere across the software lifecycle. Deep learning has been very successful in social sciences and specially areas where there is a lot of data. Trading is another field that can be viewed as social science with a lot of data. IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...

In IT, we sometimes coin terms for things before we know exactly what they are and how they’ll be used. The resulting terms may capture a common set of aspirations and goals – as “cloud” did broadly for on-demand, self-service, and flexible computing. But such a term can also lump together diverse and even competing practices, technologies, and priorities to the point where important distinctions are glossed over and lost.
"Cloud computing is certainly changing how people consume storage, how they use it, and what they use it for. When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect...
