Seven Amazing Times Social Media Helped Land a Job

Making career moves with social networks

Competitive job markets make it tough to start or grow a career; everyone is scrambling to catch the attention of their ideal employer. Social media is one tool that you can use to get some notice for yourself. Take some inspiration from the following stories.

The Super Sweet Tweet

social recruiting blog lists some amazing stories of how social media has helped people land jobs, including the story of Bilal Jaffery. How can you make yourself shine in 140 characters or less? Vala Afshar put that challenge to potential recruits for a position at Enterasys. The tweet read: "I am hiring a director of #marketing, focused on higher-ed; six figure salary, amazing team. Apply via Twitter. #jobs". Afshar refused to accept traditional resumes. Bilal Jaffery landed the job-all because of one tweet that captured Afshar's attention and highlighted his job skills.

While it may take more than a tweet or two for most people to land a job, Jaffery's experience teaches a valuable lesson. Use social media to connect with companies that interest you. You never know where the connections might lead.

A Mind Blowing Blog

This next example tells the story of someone who definitely wrote more than 140 characters. Kiley Stenberg started a fashion blog because she wanted to express herself creatively, and it was something she loved to do. Her passion for fashion earned her the attention of Badower's, a local men's boutique, who wanted her help to open a shop for women.

The best thing about this experience? Before she got the job with Badower's, she was not working in the fashion industry. Indeed, a creative outlet can sometimes lead to rewards that go beyond personal satisfaction.

Another blogging success story comes from Neetzan Zimmerman, who spent hours and hours on his blog every day before finally finding an employer that pays him to do what he loves-that is, blog.

Savvy Ads

While posting an ad online as part of your job search may seem like a shot in the dark, success stories say otherwise. Nicolette Weinbaum paid $200 for an ad on LinkedIn. The ad met with an astounding response. She received more than 50 emails, several interview invites, and ultimately, just what she was looking for-a job.

Another woman set her sights on a job with HarperCollins and subsequently landed the job after she posted an ad on Facebook. A well-spent $150, wouldn't you say?

The above examples show that the simple act of making yourself and your wants known can lead to good things. Don't be shy about putting yourself out there.

The Viral Video

One article at careerenlightenment.com posed the question, "Is Social Media Helping or Hindering Young People's Career Prospects?" Certainly, young people who advertise questionable conduct or irresponsible attitudes via social media are hurting their job prospects. Social media can also tip off hiring managers if a candidate is being untruthful about their skills.

However, some people are able to use social media to their great advantage. Matthew Epstein struggled in his job search for a while before he created YouTube video that went viral on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Apple and Google both invited him for interviews.

Connection Crazy

Mike Montano decided that he wanted a job in social media. In a week-long campaign, he pursued connections with a multitude of companies via a variety of social media platforms. You can guess what happened next. He landed a job.

This highlights the fact that one of the best ways to use the Internet to find a job is by grabbing connections wherever you can find them. The Internet makes it easy for job recruiters and job seekers to get in touch, evaluate each other, and pair the right people with their dream jobs. It isn't difficult to friend coworkers on Facebook, follow your favorite brands and companies on Twitter, and build an interest-arousing profile on LinkedIn.

The above stories are exceptional examples of how social media can help people land jobs, but the value of social media to job hunters is undeniable. Build up your profiles, do something creative, and who knows? Maybe your dream job is waiting for you.
