IRVING, TX -- (Marketwired) -- 01/22/14 -- A groundbreaking study by researchers from Mayo Clinic and CareHere, LLC, published in the January 2014 issue of The American Heart Journal, determined that using a personal health assistant (PHA) as part of a worksite health program (WHP) "can successfully and significantly reduce multiple cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors." CVD is the leading cause of morbidity, mortality and cost in Western society.
Researchers determined that in just 90 days most employees participating in a worksite health program that incorporated the online CareHere Connect PHA -- a customized and branded version of Healarium's PHA -- showed a significant reduction in their Framingham Risk Score (FRS). The FRS is used to estimate a person's 10-year cardiovascular disease risk. For example:
- 73 percent of study participants decreased their body mass index (BMI)
- 62 percent of participants reduced their blood glucose level
- 49 percent of participants lowered their blood pressure
The results show that participants who completed the program not only demonstrated a significant reduction in at least one risk factor, but often in multiple factors.
Participants in the study, "Employing an Online, Personalized Program Reduces Cardiovascular Risk Factor Profiles in a Motivated, Adherent Population of Participants," used the online CareHere Connect PHA. This provided participating employees with user-friendly, interactive access to health status information, daily tasks, goals, personalized care plans, incentives and a social network that encouraged adopting and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.
"This study validates the ability of our PHA to engage and motivate employees to make positive behavior changes that improve their health," stated Healarium CEO and Co-founder Amnon Keynan. "We were pleased that the researchers also recognized PHA's far-reaching potential. They concluded that this type of program may extend well beyond reducing employer-related healthcare costs, and may be applied to other populations to reduce the morbidity, mortality, and costs associated with increasing cardiovascular disease risk factors. That potential is being realized as market demand for Healarium's PHA continues to grow."
"As the researchers point out, employers are now recognizing how health in the workplace can lower health risk for their workforce," said Brendie Keane, R.N., B.S.N., Vice President, Health and Wellness, CareHere, LLC. "However, the challenge has been to entice patients to access and engage in worksite health programs. It was exciting to see how the CareHere Connect PHA along with disincentives broke through this traditional apathy and how quickly employees were able to significantly reduce multiple CVD risk factors."
The researchers for the study were Robert Jay Widmer, M.D., Ph.D., Thomas G. Allison, Ph.D., Lilach Lerman, M.D., Ph.D. and Amir Lerman, M.D. from Mayo Clinic; and Brendie Keane, R.N., B.S.N. and Anthony Dallas, M.D. from CareHere.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly by extending current technologies, products and networks. By 2020, Cisco estimates there will be 50 billion connected devices. Gartner has forecast revenues of over $300 billion, just to IoT suppliers. Now is the time to figure out how you’ll make money – not just create innovative products. With hundreds of new products and companies jumping into the IoT fray every month, there’s no shortage of innovation. Despite this, McKinsey/VisionMobile data...

Cloud computing is unquestionably one of the driving forces of DevOps, as the automation of operations transforms enterprise software development. DevOps, however, is more than a technology trend, as it represents a move toward silo-busting, self-organizing horizontal teams that drive business velocity. At the same time, enterprise Digital Transformation represents an upheaval across the enterprise, as customer preferences and behavior drive enterprise technology decisions. This transformation ...

Just over a week ago I received a long and loud sustained applause for a presentation I delivered at this year’s Cloud Expo in Santa Clara. I was extremely pleased with the turnout and had some very good conversations with many of the attendees. Over the next few days I had many more meaningful conversations and was not only happy with the results but also learned a few new things. Here is everything I learned in those three days distilled into three short points.

In demand-intensive mobile and web applications, an emerging pattern is to host the Systems of Engagement in the cloud (for maximum responsiveness) but keep the Systems of Record with the other important business systems in the company datacenter, often on a tightly secured mainframe. But what about the space in between? In this IBM Redpaper publication, we show that the IBM Bluemix cloud platform offers technologies that make it easy for cloud-based SoEs to securely connect to on-premises IBM...

DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, rich desktop and tuned mobile experiences can now be created with a single codebase – without compromising functionality, performance or usability. In his session at DevOps Su...
