This study investigates the market for water and wastewater treatment chemicals in the GCC countries, identifying the key chemical types and the end-user industries for the same. It examines the revenue and volume shipment for the six countries across each water treatment chemical type and across each end-user industry, providing a detailed outlook, along with the market size, revenue forecast until 2017 as well as market drivers and restraints. The total market's competitive structure in terms of companies and their presence is also included. This study is significant considering the shortage in water resources in the GCC and initiatives of local governments to conserve and reuse water towards building a sustainable future.
Market Overview - Definitions and Scope of Study
This research service presents current and future trends of the GCC industrial water and wastewater treatment chemicals market from 2011 to 2017, with 2012 as the base year.
The study focuses on the following most commonly used, specific groups of industrial water and wastewater treatment chemicals:
- pH conditioners
- Corrosion and Scale Inhibitors
- Biocides and Disinfectants
- Other types of chemicals (*Other types include softeners, antifoaming, defoaming, colour control, and odour control)
In the GCC countries, there are limited applications for water treatment chemicals besides for caustic soda, sulphuric acid, and hydrochloric acid, which are extensively used in the oil and gas, petrochemicals, and chemical industries.
The types of water to be treated can be classified as follows:
- Raw water
- Process water
- Effluent water
Primary treatment of raw water, as it is commonly known, is carried out to remove organic and inorganic solids, impurities like dirt and other suspended particles, and oxides of metal and colloidal substances.
This process is a combination of both physical and chemical methods. This is done to ensure that the quality of the water obtained from places like municipalities and fresh water sources are up to required standards.
Process water treatment, or cooling water treatment, refers to the water that is used in the internal and external circuits of various process systems such as cooling and heating.
There is a significant change in the temperature, pressure, and pH level of the water that is used for process water treatment.
Scaling and corrosion are very common in these process loops because of the corrosive reaction between water and metal surfaces repeatedly.
Biocides, corrosion and scale inhibitors, and certain inorganic commodity chemicals are most commonly used to treat water used during this phase.
Effluent water treatment is carried out to ensure that the water released from the industries to the environment does not contain heavy metals, metal oxides, and other impurities which can be harmful.
Processing also takes place to prepare the water for reuse. Coagulants, flocculants, and activated carbon are chemicals most frequently used.

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...

The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to simplify and streamline our lives by automating routine tasks that distract us from our goals. This promise is based on the ubiquitous deployment of smart, connected devices that link everything from industrial control systems to automobiles to refrigerators. Unfortunately, comparatively few of the devices currently deployed have been developed with an eye toward security, and as the DDoS attacks of late October 2016 have demonstrated, this oversight can ...
