Minister Blaney Speaks at National Forum on Human Trafficking

Strong partnerships key to combatting human trafficking

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 01/29/14 -- Public Safety Canada

The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today reaffirmed the Harper Government's commitment to the fight against a modern-day form of slavery while speaking to participants of the National Forum on Human Trafficking.

This two day forum brings together key stakeholders and decision-makers, from various sectors of society, who are engaged in the fight against human trafficking. Participants will identify and focus on areas where continued action is required, as well as measures that will inform federal efforts under the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking.

In June 2012, our Government launched the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, which introduced aggressive new initiatives to prevent human trafficking, identify victims, protect the most vulnerable, and prosecute perpetrators, in addition to consolidating ongoing efforts of the federal government to combat human trafficking. The National Action Plan supports organizations providing assistance to victims and builds on our current response of working together with our partners to prevent and combat this disturbing crime.

Quick Facts

-- Key achievements of the National Action Plan include:

    -- a special RCMP Enforcement Team to combat human trafficking, which
        will work closely with law enforcement partners;
    -- online and in-person consultations with human trafficking
        stakeholders across Canada;
    -- a partnership with the National Association of Friendship Centres to
        develop a human trafficking information and awareness campaign aimed
        at Aboriginal populations;
    -- increased outreach information specifically targeting foreign
        nationals and temporary foreign workers who may be vulnerable to
        human trafficking;
    -- launch of a youth awareness campaign through the Royal Canadian
        Mounted Police (RCMP); and,
    -- the issuance of negative Labour Market Opinions to businesses
        related to the sex trade and, at the same time, no longer processing
        work permit applications from temporary foreign workers destined to
        work for the same businesses;

Quotes

"Human trafficking is a despicable crime that preys on the most vulnerable in our society. Significant progress has been made over the past year, and much work remains to be done. The key to the long-term success of the Action Plan is communication and engagement with stakeholders and experts across the country. I believe strongly in the importance of bringing together interested players to confront this challenge together."

The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

"The Canadian Women's Foundation Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls in Canada is honoured to be a part of the Government of Canada's National Human Trafficking Forum where we know it is vital for Government, social service agencies, police, philanthropy and the private sector to come together to end the horrific crime of human trafficking in Canada."

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong.
