Media Advisory - Events planned to mark Veterans Affairs office closures tomorrow

OTTAWA, Jan. 30, 2014 /CNW/ - Veterans are calling on Canadians everywhere to wear black ribbons in support of their fight, and have events planned in the following communities tomorrow, January 31:

Corner Brook, Newfoundland: Veteran Paul Davis will join veterans and community members at a wreath laying ceremony at noon at the Veterans Affairs Office at 1 Regent Sq, Corner Brook.

Charlottetown, PEI: Veterans will gather at the Charlottetown Veterans Affairs district office at noon Friday. It is located at 90 University Avenue. The public are asked to wear black ribbons in support of veterans opposing the closures.

Sydney, Nova Scotia: Veteran Ron Clarke will join veterans and community members at noon Friday at a black ribbon ceremony at the Veterans Affairs Office at 308 George Street in Sydney.

Thunder Bay, Ontario: Veterans in the Thunder Bay area will be holding a memorial service over the loss of the local Veterans Affairs Canada office located at 214 Red River Rd, Thunder Bay on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 11am. They will be joined by Mayor Keith Hobbs, MPP Michael Gravelle and MP Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay - Superior North).

Windsor, Ontario: Veterans will hold a memorial service over the loss of the local Veterans Affairs Canada office located at 441 University Ave W. in Windsor on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 11am. Veterans will be wearing black armbands as they lay a wreath at the doors of the office, and hold a small memorial to signify the loss of services to over 2,600 veterans.

Brandon, Manitoba: Local veterans who served in WWII, the Korean War, the War in Afghanistan and representatives from the RCMP Veterans' Association will gather at 2:00 pm Friday at the Brandon Veterans Affairs district office at 1039 Princess Ave. to speak out against the closure and call on Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire, Minister for Veterans Affairs Julian Fantino and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to reopen the offices and fully restore the face-to-face services veterans deserve.
