SEATTLE, Jan. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- New York is enemy territory for the Seahawks, but that isn't deterring Seattle area company Pixelfire from showing the famed 12th Man flag in the heart of NYC in Times Square on the 7 Times Square electronic billboard before the Big Game.
Such high visibility for Seahawks support in NYC is a gutsy move for a production company based in Renton, WA, a working class suburb of Seattle, but Pixelfire President Steve Bumstead is a die-hard Seahawks fan with a knack for clever gorilla marketing. His Creative Director Marvin Sanders came up with the scheme. "My first thought was to give equal sign time to Seattle and Denver, but why waste valuable screen time on Denver?" quips Sanders. "We hope it gets boisterous fans fired up to break a record," says Bumstead.
Noise is legendary for the Seahawks on their home turf where the Guinness Book of World Records logged 136.6 decibels at CenturyLink field during a 29-3 win over the 49ers. The Seahawks' website reports that's 13.4 decibels short of "eardrum rupture."
Seattle's fans are known as "The 12th Man," and as the loudest in the NFL, compelling the League to establish a noise rule in 1985. Despite the rule, the 12th Man continues, giving the Seahawks a home field advantage, but it remains to be seen whether fans in New York will match that home field advantage in the upcoming Super Bowl at MetLife stadium in New Jersey. They'll have to beat The Chiefs' who since hit a record 137.5 decibels at Arrowhead.
This gesture of support is made possible because much of Pixelfire's business is in Times Square where they create content for several of the digital screens.
