Local TeoChew Society springs into Horse Year to strengthen symbiotic prospects

VANCOUVER, Feb. 1, 2014 /CNW/ - Galloping full speed into the Year of the Horse, the Canada Chaoshan Business Association, in partnership with TeoChew member associations from across Canada, have officially unveiled plans for one of the most important and prestigious events to come to Vancouver - the 18th Convention of the TeoChew International Federation. The event, which will draw over 3000 delegates of TeoChew (also referred to as Chaozhao or Chiuchow) ethnicity from around the world, will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre August 19-21, 2015.

The TeoChew population, now numbering over 50 million world-wide, originated from the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong province. The TeoChew dialect, along with its cuisine, performing arts and woodcraft, is world-renowned. The TeoChew people are also recognized for their hardworking ethic and keen business acumen.

"It is a great honour for our members and community to be the host of the 18th TeoChew International Convention next year," said Mr. Lam Siu-Ngai, Chairman of the Canada Chaoshan Business Association. "We look forward to showing off the beauty and economic sustainability of Vancouver to our extended Chaoshan Business Association members from all over the world, and hope that we can play a role in helping local businesses to expand their network globally."

The Canada Chaoshan Business Association was established in 2012, with the mandate to "expand and build the Sino-Canada commerce platform and facilitate trade relations internationally, united TeoChew people around the world." Famed Association members include the 25th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable David Lam, and current Member of Parliament Dr. Alice Wong, amongst many successful entrepreneurs in the financial, development, energy, technology and education sectors.

In 2011, Mayor Gregor Robertson announced September 10 as "TeoChew Appreciation Day" in recognition of the contribution of the TeoChew people to Vancouver's history and community.

The 18th Convention of the TeoChew International Federation will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre from August 19-21, 2015. The TeoChew International Convention takes place biannually, and is a chance for members all over the world to get together and develop lasting relationships with each other as well as politicians and businesses of the host city. The three-day event will feature various industry seminars and networking receptions, allowing local businesses a rare opportunity to reach thousands of potential business partners from around the world in one place.
