ICD 10: Will The Procrastinating Physicians Derail The Implementation, Probably Not

The industry is conducting surveys to monitor the ICD-10 readiness of providers, vendors, and payers. There is a massive increase in activity among providers and payers seeking to align and test for ICD-10 transition.

DURHAM, N.C., Feb. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The American Medical Association (AMA) is providing free educational resources to help medical practices cope up with this transition, but is it enough? According to a recent study*, the clinical documentation of over 20,000 physicians showed that only 63% of current documentation is adequate to support the more meticulous ICD-10 requirements. Consequently, ICD-10 documentation training is an absolute must-have for a smooth transition as without appropriate documentation accurate coding and proper payment is not possible.

What should physician do now to make sure they are ready for ICD-10? It is evident that a change to effective utilization of ICD-10 will not occur on its own. Physicians must take steps to prepare themselves for implementing ICD-10. Primarily, assessing computer systems is the first-step in preparing for the transition, as many computer systems still use ICD-9 codes. The ICD-10 transition planning should start with impact assessment, which includes practice management systems, EHR systems, clinical documentation, superbills, and more. Some level of training with regard to ICD-10 will be helpful during the transition for all the staff members and providers.

This is a good time to get a reality-check done for the practice's and assess their efficiency. The implementation is a daunting process; planning and preparation will facilitate a successful transition. To familiarize the physicians with the nuances and increased specificity of ICD-10, AudioEducator is providing specialty-specific ICD-10 training to prepare the physicians for more rigorous ICD-10 requirements. Given the recent regulatory changes to eliminate fraud, waste and abuse in health care, correct documentation and billing of services are vital to avoid costly denials and lengthy appeals. AudioEducator's ICD-10 training session is equipped to help the physician comprehend this massive overhaul, as with ICD-10 there has been a fourfold increase in specificity in documentation. The specialty-specific training will help the physician learn about the intricate changes happening in their field— anatomic specific coding, laterality coding, inpatient hospital specific coding, and more.

In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, will compare the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, e...
What happens when the different parts of a vehicle become smarter than the vehicle itself? As we move toward the era of smart everything, hundreds of entities in a vehicle that communicate with each other, the vehicle and external systems create a need for identity orchestration so that all entities work as a conglomerate. Much like an orchestra without a conductor, without the ability to secure, control, and connect the link between a vehicle’s head unit, devices, and systems and to manage the ...
