Largest US College Sales & Marketing Internship Program Opens its 9th Year

ATLANTA, Feb. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- As today's college students look for ways to improve their employment chances by accepting internships with companies throughout the U.S., Campus Special, a nationwide intern program connected with students from over 500 colleges and universities, is entering its ninth year with an open application period beginning this month.

Campus Special is a paid marketing and sales internship that allows students to interact with local businesses through a unique marketing program that provides multimedia advertising which targets college students. Interns are hired as marketing consultants to work with local merchants to increase their exposure to the college audience. Interns gain critical hands-on experience in sales, marketing, advertising, and account management.

The Campus Special internship can be an important step towards employment following graduation. According to a 2013 Accenture employment study, 41% of college students who graduated during 2011-2012 indicated they were underemployed and working in jobs that were not relevant to their degrees due, in part, to a lack of skills and training. In an effort to become more marketable after graduation, students have turned to internships for training and work experience. Often, however, intern positions can be "gopher" roles offering little in the way of actual work experience. The Campus Special program provides students with essential skills and practical work experience that can be used to launch their careers after graduation.

The company hosts a four-day training conference in April held in Chicago, where interns learn about the products, role play, and apply skills in practical exercises. Campus Special has developed over 3,000 students during the program's existence. According to the website, "97% of Campus Special interns land a career upon graduation compared to 47% of (non-intern) college students". After the internship interns are eligible to interview with over 60+ Career Partners looking to hire directly from the program.

Campus Special President and CEO Chau Nguyen has seen the battle for career opportunities for graduates intensify since 2008. "The job market has become increasingly competitive for college graduates," he said. "Internships used to be an added bonus, now employers view them as mandatory. Prospective employers want to see a proven track record of success. They want to see real hands-on experience backed up by quantitative data that shows not only what you did but how well you did it."

Campus Special was named Best Place to Intern by Intern Bridge, a consulting and research firm that tracks college recruitment activities.
