Valentine's Day: Facts and Tips to Save Money on Romance's Big Day

Which Gifts are Popular Before and AFTER Valentine's Day?

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers have been spending more each year on Valentine's Day, according to an Offers.com Valentine's Day Survey. While spending has increased, what consumers actually spend that money on doesn't stray too far from the classics.

"You can't go wrong with flowers or candy on Valentine's Day," said Offers.com Savings Expert Howard Schaffer. "Fifty-eight percent of shoppers plan to buy flowers, candy or chocolate this year. Our survey revealed a lot of interesting insights into how people spend money on Valentine's Day."

The Valentine's Day Rundown
Check out these Valentine's Day gift shopping trends for 2013 and 2014:

  • Flowers are the gift most people plan to purchase this year (32%), followed by candy or chocolate (26%), jewelry (13%), lingerie (9%) and gift baskets (6%).
  • The average person spent about $130 on Valentine's Day gifts last year. (That's up from $116 per person in 2011.)
  • The majority of people (60%) plan to spend the same amount this year, while 22% plan to spend more and 18% plan to spend less.
  • Men spend almost twice as much as women ($176 vs. $89).

Jewelry is another great gift choice, but it's not the best present to your wallet before the big day. If your sweetheart can wait, you'll save a heap by hitting the jewelry sales that happen AFTER Valentine's Day. And don't worry about being an outcast because shopping late is becoming a trend. Last year, the biggest day for in-store purchases was two days after Valentine's Day.

"If you still haven't gotten around to doing your Valentine's Day shopping, you aren't alone," Schaffer said. "The majority of online Valentine's Day purchases happen the day before. There is still time to find something special. Do yourself a favor, skip the crowds, browse a bigger selection and shop online."

I wanted to gather all of my Internet of Things (IOT) blogs into a single blog (that I could later use with my University of San Francisco (USF) Big Data “MBA” course). However as I started to pull these blogs together, I realized that my IOT discussion lacked a vision; it lacked an end point towards which an organization could drive their IOT envisioning, proof of value, app dev, data engineering and data science efforts. And I think that the IOT end point is really quite simple…

These new classification techniques mean that traffic optimization, policy enforcement, and user experience are largely unaffected by encryption. In respect wit...
