Discovery Familia Launches "CAMINO AL BIENESTAR," A Health And Well-being Campaign With Hispanics In Mind

Effective all year, the initiative provides current information and resources on different health topics each month

MIAMI, Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its commitment to act as a positive force in the lives of Hispanic women and support their efforts to care for their families, Discovery Familia launches CAMINO AL BIENESTAR, a year-round initiative offering resources and advice about a variety of health and well-being topics, including prevention, alternative medicine, nutrition and physical activities.

CAMINO AL BIENESTAR is designed to target a specific health topic each month.  Prenatal care, skin care, breast cancer, men's health, fertility and mental health are just some of the subjects that will be covered this year.  Each topic will be showcased in Discovery Familia programming and in informative capsules presented by Dr. Selene Velasco, as well as on the specially created microsite caminoalbienestar.com and the network's Facebook page.

In February, the campaign will focus on heart disease, which continues to affect disproportionate numbers of Hispanic women. During American Heart Month, the network is again joining forces with The Heart Truth®, a program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to raise awareness and educate women about heart disease and its risk factors.  The collaboration features specific information on heart health and useful facts and tips on the microsite caminoalbienestar.com.

In addition to Dr. Selene's capsules, the special campaign programming includes COMIDAS CURATIVAS, a series hosted by diet and nutrition experts about the powers of certain foods to cure health problem.  The show airs Saturdays at 10PM E/P.

Dr. Selene brings to Discovery Familia years of experience in the field of general medicine with specialties in nutrition and chronic disease management (diabetes and hypertension). She completed her degree in family medicine at UCLA Santa Monica with a special interest in women's health. Dr. Velasco is now practicing as a faculty member of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine as well as the Family Medicine Residency program, with a permanent position at the Los Angeles Department of Health Services.
