Burris Introduces Dental Patients' Bill of Rights To Mark National Children's Dental Health Month

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark the start of National Children's Dental Health Month, held nationwide each February, Dr. Ben Burris, DDS, MDS has introduced a Dental Patients' Bill of Rights outlining key protections that should be afforded to all dental patients by all dental professionals. Burris is a licensed orthodontist who owns the largest privately-held orthodontics practice in North America.

"The seven pillars outlined in our Dental Patients' Bill of Rights are commonsense principles that every responsible dental professional should support and every informed dental patient should demand," said Burris. "From the right to access affordable, quality dental care in a clean, safe, friendly environment to the right to know the qualifications of professionals administering sedation procedures, these standards will secure a stronger dental system for patients of every age."

"Given the close link between oral hygiene and overall health, it is important that we place just as much value on quality dental care as we do other fields of medicine."

While all dentists graduate from dental school with a DDS or DMD degree, only those who are selected for competitive, full-time, accredited residency programs can be considered specialists and are awarded specialist licensure. In these programs, professionals spend thousands of hours under the supervision of trained specialists to become experts in one of the nine specialty areas recognized by the American Dental Association.

Under current rules in most states, however, all dental professionals are overseen by state dental boards comprised almost exclusively of Primary Care Dentists who permit any dentist to perform specialty procedures regardless of their training.

Full text of the Dental Patients' Bill of Rights is below:

  1. Every dental patient has the right to access affordable, quality dental care in a clean, safe, friendly environment.
  2. Every dental patient has the right to convenient and affordable access to professional hygiene services from competent, capable, licensed hygienists.
  3. Every dental patient has the right to be educated in proper hygiene and home care for themselves and their children by hygienists, primary care dentists, and dental specialists alike.
  4. Every dental patient has the right to obligatory education by their dental professionals on the recent studies linking poor oral health to overall health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health risks.
  5. Every dental patient has the right to receive treatment from a dental specialist when their condition requires advanced procedures. Every dental patient undergoing an advanced procedure has the right to proper education about their options from the dental professional who prescribes or proposes treatment.
  6. When specialist care is unavailable or unfeasible for any reason, every dental patient has the right to responsible informed consent by the primary care dentist who will undertake the advanced procedure in lieu of a specialist.
  7. When sedation procedures are prescribed as a course of action, patients and/or parents or legal guardians have a right to know whether the dentist performing the procedure is a qualified specialist and they must be made fully aware of all risks involved with the procedure.

Recognizing the withholding of education and responsible informed consent from these PCDs performing specialty procedures, in November Burris founded Orthodontists for Access and launched the I Choose My Smiles campaign to increase access to care, improve affordability, and educate the public on their right to quality care from well-trained professionals.
