Burris Introduces Dental Patients' Bill of Rights To Mark National Children's Dental Health Month

-Dr. Ben Burris, DDS, MDS Launches Landmark Patients' Rights Initiative to Protect Children, all Dental Consumers-

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark the start of National Children's Dental Health Month, held nationwide each February, Dr. Ben Burris, DDS, MDS has introduced a Dental Patients' Bill of Rights outlining key protections that should be afforded to all dental patients by all dental professionals. Burris is a licensed orthodontist who owns the largest privately-held orthodontics practice in North America.

"The seven pillars outlined in our Dental Patients' Bill of Rights are commonsense principles that every responsible dental professional should support and every informed dental patient should demand," said Burris. "From the right to access affordable, quality dental care in a clean, safe, friendly environment to the right to know the qualifications of professionals administering sedation procedures, these standards will secure a stronger dental system for patients of every age."

"Unfortunately, our system today encourages withholding of the knowledge outlined in the Dental Patients' Bill of Rights," continued Burris. "Given the close link between oral hygiene and overall health, it is important that we place just as much value on quality dental care as we do other fields of medicine."

While all dentists graduate from dental school with a DDS or DMD degree, only those who are selected for competitive, full-time, accredited residency programs can be considered specialists and are awarded specialist licensure. In these programs, professionals spend thousands of hours under the supervision of trained specialists to become experts in one of the nine specialty areas recognized by the American Dental Association.

Under current rules in most states, however, all dental professionals are overseen by state dental boards comprised almost exclusively of Primary Care Dentists who permit any dentist to perform specialty procedures regardless of their training.

Full text of the Dental Patients' Bill of Rights is below:

  1. Every dental patient has the right to access affordable, quality dental care in a clean, safe, friendly environment.
  2. Every dental patient has the right to convenient and affordable access to professional hygiene services from competent, capable, licensed hygienists.
  3. Every dental patient has the right to be educated in proper hygiene and home care for themselves and their children by hygienists, primary care dentists, and dental specialists alike.
  4. Every dental patient has the right to obligatory education by their dental professionals on the recent studies linking poor oral health to overall health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health risks.
  5. Every dental patient has the right to receive treatment from a dental specialist when their condition requires advanced procedures. Every dental patient undergoing an advanced procedure has the right to proper education about their options from the dental professional who prescribes or proposes treatment.
  6. When specialist care is unavailable or unfeasible for any reason, every dental patient has the right to responsible informed consent by the primary care dentist who will undertake the advanced procedure in lieu of a specialist.
  7. When sedation procedures are prescribed as a course of action, patients and/or parents or legal guardians have a right to know whether the dentist performing the procedure is a qualified specialist and they must be made fully aware of all risks involved with the procedure.

Recognizing the withholding of education and responsible informed consent from these PCDs performing specialty procedures, in November Burris founded Orthodontists for Access and launched the I Choose My Smiles campaign to increase access to care, improve affordability, and educate the public on their right to quality care from well-trained professionals.

Dr. Burris has written extensively on this subject, with opinion columns in Buzzfeed, The Hill, and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

About Dr. Ben Burris
Dr. Ben Burris, DDS, MDS, is the founder of the largest privately-held orthodontics practice in North America and spearhead of the nationwide I Choose My Smiles campaign – intended to heighten the disclosure requirements for Primary Care Dentists who provide specialized procedures without the proper qualifications to do so. With an increasing number of PCDs undertaking procedures like the application of braces, oral surgeries, periodontal work, and pediatric care, the public has a right to know when they should be treated by a specialist, whether the dental provider performing their care has attended an accredited residency program, and whether they have completed the licensure requirements to do so. The campaign is based on the principle that patients deserve the most educated, most experienced practitioner to render treatment correctly the first time, and the public should expect and demand honesty and transparency when accepting a dentist's recommendation for care. More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...
