OSPT Alliance Welcomes Mikron as Full Member

The Open Standard for Public Transport (OSPT™) Alliance today announced that Mikron, the leading manufacturer and provider of microelectronic solutions in Russia, has joined the organization as a Full Member. Mikron supports a number of national public transport organizations with its RFID tags, and is well known for its wide range of other microelectronic products including smart cards, SIM cards, chip-based bank cards, identification documents and innovative solutions for industrial electronics.

“We enthusiastically welcome Mikron to the OSPT Alliance,” said Laurent Cremer, executive director for the OSPT Alliance. “Mikron is a highly regarded provider of innovative RFID solutions and has extensive experience in the transport market. We anticipate much successful collaboration and to benefit greatly from its experience.”

Mikron is Russia’s largest RFID tag manufacturer with a capacity of more than 50 million tags per month and customers in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and North America. Its ultra high-frequency, high-frequency, and low-frequency passive RFID tags have been used for many years in applications as diverse as logistics, point of sale and electronic article surveillance.

The company sells around 40 million tags monthly to Moscow Metro that uses Mikron’s HF 13.56 MHz paper labels in its paper tickets. Mikron also provides reusable “city cards” for regional transportation authorities in Moscow, Kazan, and Novgorod. The cards, made with similar 13.56 MHz RFID labels, allow users to gain entrance to multiple transit lines, such as buses and trolleys. The company is also providing the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi with RFID tags used in the spectator passes.

“We are pleased to join other members of the global transport ecosystem in the OSPT Alliance,” said Ernst-A. Weissbach, manager of business development for Mikron GmbH. “The advent of open standards in the transport market will bring new opportunities for our customers. We intend to provide them with leadership through outstanding solutions that maximize flexibility and enable them to confidently evolve ticketing capabilities, increasing revenues.”

The OSPT Alliance offers the CIPURSE™ open security standard to address transit authorities’ needs for future-proof fare collection systems with advanced security. As an open standard, CIPURSE promotes vendor neutrality and cross-vendor system interoperability with reduced technology adoption risks, higher quality and improved market responsiveness—all of which can result in lower operating costs and greater flexibility for transport system operators. CIPURSE also offers a global basis for rapidly migrating transit fare systems to NFC-enabled mobile phones and other devices, and the standard supports the adoption of NFC transit applications for a truly future-proof solution. We all know that end users experience the Internet primarily with mobile devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps – failing fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers' relationship to your business. One of the biggest challenges with adopting a DevOps mentality is: new applications are easily adapted to cloud-native, microservice-based, or containerized architectures - they can be built for them - but old applications need complex refactoring. On the other hand, these new technologies can require relearning or adapting new, oftentimes more complex, methodologies and tools to be ready for production. In his general session at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Brown, Solutions Marketi...

HyperConvergence came to market with the objective of being simple, flexible and to help drive down operating expenses. It reduced the footprint by bundling the compute/storage/network into one box. This brought a new set of challenges as the HyperConverged vendors are very focused on their own proprietary building blocks. If you want to scale in a certain way, let's say you identified a need for more storage and want to add a device that is not sold by the HyperConverged vendor, forget about it...

Most companies are adopting or evaluating container technology - Docker in particular - to speed up application deployment, drive down cost, ease management and make application delivery more flexible overall. As with most new architectures, this dream takes a lot of work to become a reality.
