More Companies Exploring the Option to Screen Employees to Prevent Workplace Injuries

Organisations are considering Functional Capacity Evaluations to ensure employees are fit enough to start or ready to return to work after an injury with an eye towards productivity.

SINGAPORE, Feb. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- What happens when increasing staff costs meet tighter skilled labor markets? Productivity issues rise to the fore with increasingly more companies, particularly those with physically demanding work, looking to minimize staff downtime and ensure that workflow proceeds as smoothly as possible. One way companies are doing so is by accessing and ensuring that their staff are physically fit enough for the actual physical work to be done.

The physical fitness level assessment of an employee to do his or her job is known as 'Functional Capacity Evaluation'. As the name suggest, it measures the capacity of an employee to carry certain functions that their job requires.

"In the past, it was generally large foreign MNCs that were asking for FCEs but these days we have done evaluations for local companies. We see increasing demand from local Singapore companies in the future. Inexplicably, rising operating cost and labor tightness will make the cost of conducting FCEs more and more viable", says Sylvia Ho, Principal Physiotherapist at Core Concepts.

Functional Capacity Evaluation measures the person ability to carry out certain functional movements. Measurements include amongst other things, strength levels and stamina of certain basic movements involved in most job functions.

"At Core Concepts, we take it a little further to combine a musculoskeletal screening that also assesses the body's muscle, joint and skeletal structure such as joint flexibility. With our physiotherapy background, we aim to take a more comprehensive approach in detecting potential problems that may occur in the future. Our clients comes from a range of industries including the pharmaceutical industry, the oil and gas industry as well as heavy manufacturing industry.", says Ho.

FCE is only one piece of the productivity puzzle but albeit one of growing importance. Ho says, "Singapore's Ministry of Manpower adopts a national, strategic and long term approach to achieve sustainable, continuous improvement in Workplace Safety and Health performance. We hope to play our role helping industries prevent avoidable workplace health incidences."

Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
As popularity of the smart home is growing and continues to go mainstream, technological factors play a greater role. The IoT protocol houses the interoperability battery consumption, security, and configuration of a smart home device, and it can be difficult for companies to choose the right kind for their product. For both DIY and professionally installed smart homes, developers need to consider each of these elements for their product to be successful in the market and current smart homes.
Widespread fragmentation is stalling the growth of the IIoT and making it difficult for partners to work together. The number of software platforms, apps, hardware and connectivity standards is creating paralysis among businesses that are afraid of being locked into a solution. Microsoft Azure Container Services can be used for container deployment in a variety of ways including support for Orchestrators like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm and Mesos. In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
