NEW YORK, Feb. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- delivery.com today kicked off a development competition to discover original apps that enhance and create new ways to place local online orders. As the only online ordering platform where consumers can purchase prepared food, groceries, wine and spirits, and other services like wash & fold laundry, dry cleaning and tailoring, delivery.com has enhanced its API so developers can now build apps for mobile web, iOS, Android, Windows 8, Xbox, PlayStation or Google Glass. delivery.com has the first open API in the online ordering space that includes access to several types of neighborhood businesses, beyond simply restaurants. The competition offers $65,000 in total prizes--plus a share of order revenues--for the best apps that drive new users and orders to the following types of local businesses:
- Liquor stores for wine and spirits;
- Laundries and dry cleaners for pickup and delivery services (e.g. wash & fold laundry, dry cleaning and tailoring); and
- Restaurants for prepared food and catering.
This competition represents one of delivery.com's first programs in a broader initiative to work more closely with the developer community. The "delivery.com App Challenge: Develop, Disrupt & Deliver" competition provides participating developers with an opportunity to earn ongoing revenue share from orders placed through their apps. These innovative apps will leverage delivery.com's growing network of more than 10,000 neighborhood businesses in major cities nationwide.
"Developers hold the keys to unlock more online sales for local businesses with innovative apps that leverage our enhanced API and change the way people explore their communities and order online," said Jed Kleckner, CEO, delivery.com. "We look forward to working closely with developers not only for this challenge but also through ongoing commercial relationships. Our strategy is to bring more enjoyable and exciting ordering experiences to more people in more places while generating real revenue for local businesses and now for developers."
Developers are encouraged to be creative with their apps and submit videos to showcase the ordering and adoption potential. The most successful submissions could include a variety of ways to engage and delight consumers, such as:
- interactive images and videos;
- calendar and subscription services;
- gaming (such as Xbox and PlayStation);
- social media (such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Yelp and other social sharing platforms); and
- do-it-yourself ("DIY") experiences for cooking and entertaining.
The possibilities are limited only by a developer's imagination.
The challenge, administered by ChallengePost, opens today and will accept submissions through June 10, 2014. Winners will be announced the week of July 16th.
Judging the new apps are an esteemed panel, including:
- Howard W. Lutnick, Chairman and CEO, Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P.; General Partner, Cantor Ventures
- Arthur Bovino, Executive Editor, The Daily Meal
- David Levy, Venture Partner, Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator and Former EIR, Comcast Ventures
- Joshua Rahn, Industry Head – Telco, Global Marketing Solutions, Facebook
- Jason Harinstein, SVP of Corporate Development and Strategy, Groupon
- Jed Kleckner, CEO, delivery.com

When you focus on a journey from up-close, you look at your own technical and cultural history and how you changed it for the benefit of the customer. This was our starting point: too many integration issues, 13 SWP days and very long cycles. It was evident that in this fast-paced industry we could no longer afford this reality. We needed something that would take us beyond reducing the development lifecycles, CI and Agile methodologies. We made a fundamental difference, even changed our culture...

Providing the needed data for application development and testing is a huge headache for most organizations. The problems are often the same across companies - speed, quality, cost, and control. Provisioning data can take days or weeks, every time a refresh is required. Using dummy data leads to quality problems. Creating physical copies of large data sets and sending them to distributed teams of developers eats up expensive storage and bandwidth resources. And, all of these copies proliferating...

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. In this power panel at @...
