SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/13/14 -- Weather Underground, the world's first online weather service has announced that a new hazard reporting feature has been added to its popular weather app. As severe weather alerts are issued for a location, users within that area can now submit and share storm related hazards with other members of their community.
Since launching the initial crowd-reporting feature in December of 2013 which allows users to verify observed sky conditions, over one million reports have been submitted. "We noticed that severe weather events could be tracked across the world by observing the volume of crowd reports being sent to us," said Allan Hui, VP of Product at Weather Underground. "Having seen such high engagement levels from our user-base of weather enthusiasts, we decided to make our crowd-reporting feature even more meaningful by adding hazard reports."
Users will have the option to submit hazards that include: flooding, power outages, road debris and high surf, as well as, winter weather conditions such as slippery roads, white outs, and street plowing.
In addition to submitting hazard reports within the app, users can also share current severe weather alerts or screenshots of selected hazards with friends and family via SMS text, email, Facebook or Twitter. Previously submitted sky and hazard reports can be easily accessed as a layer within the app's interactive weather map, known as WunderMap®. As hazardous conditions can only be reported for one's current location, app users can be sure they are viewing weather information within their immediate proximity.
"The foundation of our crowd reporting feature lies with our passionate community that already shares weather photos, blogs, and even data from over 33,000 personal weather stations across the globe," said Toby Skinner, VP of Marketing at Weather Underground. "With today's smartphone technology it's easier than ever for our users to contribute observations and we expect hazard reports to play a valuable role in keeping people safe during severe weather events."
