Illinois Hospital Association Signs on as Supporting Organization of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative

Commits to Leadership Position in National Health Care Sustainability and Population Health Movement

RESTON, VA--(Marketwired - February 14, 2014) - The Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI) announced today that the Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) has become a Supporting Organization of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, a collaborative of leading health care institutions united to help speed the health care sector toward environmental sustainability and improved population health. HHI is a coordinated, sector-wide approach based on the premise that how we design, build and operate hospitals can help achieve the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS') Triple Aim -- better care for individuals, improved health for populations, and reduced per capita costs.

HHI was launched by twelve sponsoring hospital systems -- Advocate Health Care, Bon Secours Health System, Catholic Health Initiatives, Dignity Health, Gundersen Health System, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Inova Health System, Kaiser Permanente, MedStar Health, Partners HealthCare, Stanford University Medical Center, and Tenet Health Systems (including former Vanguard Health System) -- along with Practice Greenhealth, Health Care Without Harm and the Center for Health Design, in May 2010.

The leading hospital systems, Supporting Organizations and health care facilities work together to accelerate the widespread use of proven sustainability practices in six key "Challenge" areas:

  • Engaged Leadership
  • Healthier Food
  • Leaner Energy
  • Less Waste
  • Safer Chemicals
  • Smarter Purchasing

Each Challenge consists of detailed metrics and an implementation plan, including case studies, fact sheets, how-to guides, webinars, a communications toolkit, and data submission guidance that can be adapted by hospitals of all sizes. Success is measured and tracked with aggregate data that can be sorted by state or hospital type -- data that will be of great use for demonstrating success.

"The Illinois Hospital Association's commitment to transforming our health care delivery system makes them an ideal supporter of HHI," said Gary Cohen, President of Health Care Without Harm and Founder of HHI. "We are pleased they are joining our vibrant learning community to support this important work across the state of Illinois."

"The Illinois Hospital Association and its Institute for Innovations in Care and Quality endeavor to lead Illinois in becoming a national model for high-value health care and are pleased to join the Healthier Hospitals Initiative," said Maryjane A. Wurth, IHA President and CEO. "IHA member hospitals and health systems are engaged in practices that will lower health care costs, improve the health status of populations, and demonstrate environmental stewardship."

HHI Supporting Organizations support the goals of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative and seek opportunities to share information with organization members and associates. This initiative is completely in concert with any organization's mission of improving the health and well-being of their community, and promoting effective stewardship of human and financial resources.

"We've just seen a huge influx of new partners coming into our ecosystem, and partners building unique offerings on top of our API set," explained Seth Bostock, Chief Executive Officer at IndependenceIT, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 16th Cloud Expo, held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City.
Mobile, social, Big Data, and cloud have fundamentally changed the way we live. “Anytime, anywhere” access to data and information is no longer a luxury; it’s a requirement, in both our personal and professional lives. For IT organizations, this means pressure has never been greater to deliver meaningful services to the business and customers.
Digital Transformation is the ultimate goal of cloud computing and related initiatives. The phrase is certainly not a precise one, and as subject to hand-waving and distortion as any high-falutin' terminology in the world of information technology. Yet it is an excellent choice of words to describe what enterprise IT—and by extension, organizations in general—should be working to achieve. Digital Transformation means: handling all the data types being found and created in the organizat...

Container technology is sending shock waves through the world of cloud computing. Heralded as the 'next big thing,' containers provide software owners a consistent way to package their software and dependencies while infrastructure operators benefit from a standard way to deploy and run them. Containers present new challenges for tracking usage due to their dynamic nature. They can also be deployed to bare metal, virtual machines and various cloud platforms. How do software owners track the usag...
