WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - February 17, 2014) - Mane USA, a subsidiary of French fragrance and flavorings manufacturer V. Mane Fils SA, prevailed after a 5-week jury trial in federal court in New Jersey. Mane and its lead fine fragrance perfumer, James Krivda, were accused by competitor Givaudan Fragrances Corporation of conspiring to misappropriate over 600 trade secret fragrance formulas. Mr. Krivda was a highly successful and respected perfumer at Givaudan who left the company to join Mane in May 2008. While at Givaudan, Mr. Krivda created well-known perfumes such as Britney Spears Fantasy, Celine Dion Enchanting, Jennifer Lopez Deseo, and Ralph Wild by Ralph Lauren.
SRR Managing Director Michele Riley analyzed the trade secret formulas at issue and testified at trial on behalf of Mane regarding the appropriate value of the formulas. Givaudan had initially claimed that the "stolen" formulas were worth more than $80 million, but on February 6, 2014 an eight-member jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Mane and Mr. Krivda on all counts, and Givaudan collected no damages from either Mane or Mr. Krivda.
Ms. Riley is based in Washington, D.C. and co-leads SRR's Intellectual Property practice, which provides services to clients across the entire spectrum of IP issues, including litigation, valuation, compliance and transactions.
