The partnership combines Heirloom Computing's enterprise platform-as-a-service (PaaS) experience with smartShift Technologies' business application optimization, cloud migration and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) acumen to help enterprises modernize their IT systems, improve performance, reduce costs and boost productivity.

"For the first time, companies will be able to move from legacy mainframe infrastructure to modern, open platforms — and the cloud — with a team that truly understands the technologies and processes involved, from implementation to long-term sustainment," said Stefan Hetges, CEO of smartShift Technologies. "Companies want the best possible performance from their technology, and shifting to open architectures and cloud-based computing is a cost-effective, low-risk strategy to achieve this."

Large enterprises are increasingly looking to reduce their dependence on aging, inflexible mainframe technology that is expensive to operate and faces an increasing skills shortage. The partnership of smartShift Technologies and Heirloom Computing offers the integrated hardware, platform and application sustainment services to translate legacy languages like COBOL and Natural to widely supported Java, and move them to modern platforms, enabling companies to run and scale these systems flexibly and affordably in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) environment or on the cloud.

"Our two companies have decades of combined experience covering mainframes, client-server, open architectures and the cloud, a truly unparalleled knowledge base in the industry," said Gary Crook, CEO of Heirloom Computing. "Our expertise will help companies future proof their technology and improve the availability, reliability and scalability of their systems in a transformative way."

When you focus on a journey from up-close, you look at your own technical and cultural history and how you changed it for the benefit of the customer. This was our starting point: too many integration issues, 13 SWP days and very long cycles. It was evident that in this fast-paced industry we could no longer afford this reality. We needed something that would take us beyond reducing the development lifecycles, CI and Agile methodologies. We made a fundamental difference, even changed our culture...
