Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform Leveraged by Alcatel-Lucent, CloudBand ™ as Part of Its Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Platform

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Alcatel-Lucent, a company at the forefront of the move to the cloud for global telecommunications companies, will deploy Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), as the common platform for its Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solution, CloudBand.

NFV solutions use virtualization technology to consolidate several network equipment types on industry-standard high volume servers, switches, and storage. Red Hat will be part of Alcatel-Lucent’s CloudBand NFV platform, which offers a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services, supporting a flexible network infrastructure needed to move complex applications and services to the cloud.

Alcatel-Lucent specifically chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform for use in managing CloudBand Nodes, the turn-key, all-in-one compute, storage and network node system that interfaces with the CloudBand Management System, along with any other OpenStack-enabled nodes.

Additionally, Red Hat was selected for its ability to enable faster, open innovation through contribution in new upstream OpenStack projects. This collaboration is a product of Alcatel-Lucent’s successful CloudBand Ecosystem Program and Red Hat’s ISV Partner Program in which Alcatel-Lucent holds Premier status.

The Alcatel-Lucent CloudBand node also leverages the previously announced partnership between Red Hat and Alcatel-Lucent’s software-defined networking (SDN) venture, Nuage Networks, to provide a single automatically deployable stack that includes Nuage SDN, Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, virtual storage and management tools.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform builds on Red Hat's ten year commitment to building an industry-leading partner ecosystem for compute, storage and networking that delivers the highest levels of industry-standard compatibility for an enterprise-ready OpenStack solution. Since introducing its Red Hat OpenStack Cloud Infrastructure Partner Network in Spring 2013, Red Hat has built the industry’s largest ecosystem in support of commercial OpenStack deployments.

“Service providers in today’s environment want better control over their products and services delivered to their customers, including not being tied to proprietary equipment, being able to lower CapEx and OpEx, improve time-to-market and deliver innovative and competitive products and services. We’re delighted that Red Hat’s technology has been recognized as best-in-class in the industry for the CloudBand NFV platform and excited that our strength in bringing open source innovation from projects to enterprise-ready products will offer value to all the vendors hosting applications on CloudBand.”

Dor Skuler, vice president and general manager, CloudBand Business Unit, Alcatel-Lucent

“Alcatel-Lucent is dedicated to working with service providers as they begin to move quickly towards the cloud. Working with Red Hat, the major contributor to OpenStack, gives us both the visibility and ability to provide input to OpenStack upstream projects, in order to highlight specific stringent requirements networks demand. The insight that both Alcatel and Red Hat bring - from ETSI NFV to OpenStack - and the CloudBand NFV platform is essential to drive the telecommunications industry forward.”

The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...

Automation is enabling enterprises to design, deploy, and manage more complex, hybrid cloud environments. Yet the people who manage these environments must be trained in and understanding these environments better than ever before. A new era of analytics and cognitive computing is adding intelligence, but also more complexity, to these cloud environments. How smart is your cloud? How smart should it be? In this power panel at 20th Cloud Expo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, pane...
With billions of sensors deployed worldwide, the amount of machine-generated data will soon exceed what our networks can handle. But consumers and businesses will expect seamless experiences and real-time responsiveness. What does this mean for IoT devices and the infrastructure that supports them? More of the data will need to be handled at - or closer to - the devices themselves.
Building a cross-cloud operational model can be a daunting task. Per-cloud silos are not the answer, but neither is a fully generic abstraction plane that strips out capabilities unique to a particular provider. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Wolf, VP & Chief Technology Officer, Global Field & Industry at VMware, will discuss how successful organizations approach cloud operations and management, with insights into where operations should be centralized and when it’s best to decentraliz...
In recent years, containers have taken the world by storm. Companies of all sizes and industries have realized the massive benefits of containers, such as unprecedented mobility, higher hardware utilization, and increased flexibility and agility; however, many containers today are non-persistent. Containers without persistence miss out on many benefits, and in many cases simply pass the responsibility of persistence onto other infrastructure, adding additional complexity.

DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.
Back in February of 2017, Andrew Clay Schafer of Pivotal tweeted the following: “seriously tho, the whole software industry is stuck on deployment when we desperately need architecture and telemetry.” Intrigue in a 140 characters. For me, I hear Andrew saying, “we’re jumping to step 5 before we’ve successfully completed steps 1-4.”
All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched interests usually throw a wrench in the work...
