Modern construction practices prioritize safety with mandatory risk mitigation measures in buildings

OSLO, Norway, Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Safety in buildings has remained one of the major priorities for construction companies and architects all over the world. New and modern practices in construction and building have set in place a number of safety measures designed to make buildings safer. The new measures cut across both public and private buildings. According to building safety experts threats to safety in any building can be external or internal. However, the mandatory safety measures are effective in mitigating both internal and external threats. Furthermore, experts advise that it is imperative for all buildings to consider and implement these measures.

Earthquake proof is one of the major mandatory safety measures that buildings should implement. The real picture on how devastating earthquakes can be is known all too well. In order to limit loss of human life and property, earthquake proof building is mandatory. Making a building earthquake prove is not a small undertaking in fact, experts in the construction industry note that this is a big investment. However, simple yet effective construction techniques can help protect buildings from total devastation in the event of an earthquake. Architects and civil engineers advise lighter roofs and extensive use of strong columns in construction.

Protection from fire is one of the traditional safety measures in buildings and even today, fireproof buildings have become a major priority in the construction industry. Measuring standards of safety in any building may involve a number of parameters but construction and safety experts note that fire safety is one of the most important ones. The installation of fire alarm systems is the easiest and most efficient way to ensure buildings are safe from fires. Safety analysts and auditors note that fire alarms have played a significant role in preventing destructive infernos in buildings for years.

Emerging and new practices in the construction industry are also putting more emphasis in air conditioning especially for public buildings. Players in the construction industry argue that air conditioning prevents potential suffocation and also helps to preserve buildings. A broad range of air conditioning technology or solutions are available for contractors.

It is imperative though for building managers to conduct periodic maintenance checks on the air conditioning systems to ensure they are working perfectly.

Safeguarding an entire building from all potential threats is something construction experts say takes time, resources and a lot of pro-activity. Foreseeing accidents before they happen is highly recommended but sometimes this might not be possible. Disaster response measures in that case have featured a lot as part of safety measures that buildings need to enforce. Exit doors are regarded in the construction industry as a major factor in responding to accidents. The doors can be a safe way out for stranded people in the building or a way in for paramedics and rescue teams.

When it comes to child protection in buildings the debate on what needs to be done continues to rage on. Industry standards on childproof buildings however have pointed to a number of fundamental measures. To start with, contractors are advised to avoid sleek floors in buildings that expect children on a regular basis.

Security systems are also fronted as a major part of safety construction. According to crime reports, over 80% of robberies today happen in buildings without modern security systems. Security analysts note that this statistic is a vindication of the important role security systems play in maintaining safety. Disease and infections although rare can also be a threat to people inside a building. Fumigation and parasite control measures are recommended as one way to mitigate the risk of infections and disease. Architects and contractors acknowledge that protecting buildings from all threats is realistically impossible. However the mandatory safety measures that are now part of modern building practices seem to mitigate a bigger share of risks that buildings face today.
